Position Summary
The Assistant Director, Multicultural Affairs supports the director in carrying out the office mission, educational and cultural programs and events, student and organization advising, and budgetary/fiscal matters. The primary mission of the office is to ensure that all students succeed in an environment that is fully welcoming and supportive. To that end, the Office of Multicultural Affairs is committed to maintaining an environment of inclusion for all marginalized communities, through programming, advising, and other means. This includes regular and frequent meetings with students, campus partners, the administration, and over a dozen cultural student organizations. Working knowledge of and expertise in designing and facilitating training and dialogues around critical issues in social justice is imperative. The ideal candidate will, thus, have, in addition to sharp critical thinking skills, experience in both advocating on behalf of marginalized student populations, as well as being a strong and active ally in supporting those communities.

Essential Functions
- Administers an area or program in student services, evaluates and recommends decisions on program eligibility
- Reviews decisions recommended by other staff
- Collaborates with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interprets policies, and mediates complex and sensitive issues
- Resolves multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsels students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues
- Reconciles complex issues; analyzes diverse transactions from multiple sources
- Summarizes data from multiple sources, prepares management reports and presentations
- Develops and implements inclusive programs for a multicultural community and foster collaborative relations and advocacy organizations and community groups
- Provides one-on-one and group coaching, advising and mentorship to students and organizations
- Informs students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, makes recommendations and may award grants
- Serves as a subject matter expert to other departments; represents the unit or department
- Serves as representative and alternate leader of OMA Diversity Council, leads the Rice Black Male Leadership Initiative (BMLI, and serves as OMA sponsor to Rice PRIDE.
- May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets
- Performs all other duties as assigned
- Provides direction and leadership in support of student engagement in co-curricular and curricular activities that create multicultural community building activities and enrich the Rice campus experience
- Promotes culture of inclusion and increases multicultural awareness and support programs aimed at celebrating differences, promoting social justice, and student retention efforts
- Directs the cultivation and management of university-community partnerships that promote the goals and objectives of OMA
- Organizes and implements campus-wide cultural history month events
- Maintains office social media accounts and web page.
- Provides various training workshops for the campus community
- Serves as advisor to 11 residential college Diversity Councils
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 3 years of job-related experience working with cultural student organizations, student activities, cultural programming, and/or student development
- Skills Required
- Leadership training experience and background dealing with issues related to diversity and inclusion
- Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Advanced customer service skills
- Understanding of financial transactions
- Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial,
and university policies and external regulations
- Master’s degree in student affairs
- Creative media design experience
- Experience working with diverse and academically elite student populations
- Proven experience as a student advocate
- Experience working with university athletic programs
- Experience with activism networks
- Bilingual
- This position has flexible work arrangements
- Frequent evening and occasional weekend work
