Senior Editor



Position Summary:

Calling all storytellers! University of Dayton Magazine is looking for a strong journalistic writer and keen editor who is invigorated by the opportunity to tell print and digital stories alongside a team of talented, committed creative colleagues. Faith and community run deep on our campus, and the people we interview have stories to tell about friendship, leadership, service and learning.

The senior editor will create stories that reflect the University’s vision and mission and build the University’s reputation through high-quality, high-impact communications. Print and digital issues of University of Dayton Magazine are produced quarterly, with continuous opportunities for web, social, audio and video storytelling; multimedia storytelling experience is a plus. The senior editor collaborates with magazine staff and works with student and freelance writers, photographers and videographers to complete projects on time. We aim to authentically and intentionally represent all forms of diversity in the UD community in our marketing and communications. This position works to ensure voices and perspectives of members from throughout our campus and alumni community are presented. Hybrid work arrangement available. This position reports to the executive editorial director.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or related field
- 2 years professional writing/editing experience
- Excellent story interviewing, writing and editing skills
- Excellent oral communications skills
- Proven experience taking initiative and meeting deadlines
- Proven experience applying a style guide
- Proven experience working in a creative team

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

- Five or more years of professional experience in communications or marketing-related field
- Proficiency in AP Style
- Experience in higher education or nonprofit communications
- Experience in magazine or other publication-format communications
- Experience within and appreciation of diverse work environments
- Experience working with socially and culturally diverse communities
- Documented success implementing a social media campaign
- Demonstrated ability to take a multimedia approach to storytelling
- Experience applying brand standards to projects
- Experience working with Photoshop, Premiere or other photo and video software
- Experience working in Cascade or other web CMS

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.

The University will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic on campus and in the community as well as developments in federal and state requirements, and also will continue to regularly consult with public health officials and our medical panel. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, our protocols and requirements are subject to change depending on conditions on campus or in our community, and government requirements.
