Salary for Announcement
The salary range is $115,000-150,000.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Position Summary
The Director of External Affairs is MSU Denver’s lead in establishing and operationalizing the strategic vision for engagement with external partners and community members to support the University’s mission. This position cultivates university-wide partnerships with key organizations and leaders across the Denver metro area and state; develops and implements a community engagement strategy that raises awareness and creates opportunities to advance MSU Denver’s strategic priorities; and works closely with leaders across the university, including Trustees and other external advisors, to establish a collective and coordinated approach to external affairs within our institution. The Director of External Affairs will also lead both the university’s advocacy network, MSU Denver Champions, as well as the MSU Denver Community Cabinet; these groups are composed of leaders dedicated to sharing their time and influence to support external relations.
A successful individual in this role will be a self-starter who: is both energized by the opportunity to develop a visionary strategy and motivated to lead the operations to realize their vision; likes to lead collaboratively, is skilled at cross-functional engagement, and is driven to support and empower others to engage in external work; and brings a knowledge of the Colorado community to generate new ideas and connections that support the university’s external affairs.
This role sits within the Office of the President and reports directly to the university’s Executive Director of Government Affairs.
Duties/Responsibilities
· Develops the vision and leads the implementation of a university-wide external affairs strategy, to include existing efforts and partnerships as well as new ideas and relationships.
· Proactively identifies new opportunities for MSU Denver to enhance its mission and progress toward its strategic goals through partnerships with businesses, nonprofits and community leaders.
· Personally develops deep relationships within the local community and serves as MSU Denver’s representative in a variety of external settings. Is the expert in the University’s historic and existing external engagement work.
· Creates and executes strategies to engage leaders across campus, as well as outside stakeholders (e.g. university trustees and other advisors), in a collective approach to external affairs.
· Directs the strategy that informs University event sponsorships and organizational memberships, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, University Advancement, and other departments, to support the University’s strategic plan and the President’s priorities.
· Sets and achieves demonstrable goals for external affairs efforts and engages individuals and teams across the University to support the goals.
· Leads the development and engagement of the MSU Denver Community Cabinet and MSU Denver Champions network to support the university’s external affairs.
Required Qualifications
· 5+ years of professional experience in external affairs, community relations and/or related fields
· Significant experience building and stewarding relationships with individuals and organizations
· Experience managing and leveraging resources in partnership to maximize an organization’s reputation, visibility, and strategic priorities
· A deep understanding of the internal and external conditions relevant to community outreach
· Experience in project management and cross-functional planning and coordination
· Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment that contributes to an overall mission and goals
Preferred Qualifications
· 7-10 years of professional experience in community relations, organizing and/or public affairs
· Experience building partnerships in Colorado’s nonprofit, business and leadership communities
· Experience in higher education
· Experience managing a budget
· Proficient in Spanish—both verbal and written
