Overview
Measurement and Evaluation Research Group (MERG; Georg E. Matt, PhD, Director) is an extramurally funded research group at San Diego State University (SDSU) with members from the Public Health, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Communications departments at SDSU as well as external research groups. The research conducted at MERG covers a wide range of tobacco-related issues in measurement, evaluation, and health policy.

Under the general direction of the PIs, the incumbent will be responsible for coordination and day-to-day management of all aspects of extramurally funded tobacco research projects, including program planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation. Research projects conducted by this unit are led by investigators from San Diego State University in collaboration with researchers from other research, academic, and clinical institutions throughout the US. An understanding of the research process, effective and efficient communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail are critical for successful completion of responsibilities.

**Please note that due to the potential for the contamination of study samples, all members of the research group must be a nonsmoker and non-user of tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and marijuana, and must reside with nonsmokers/ nonusers.



Responsibilities
Working under the general direction of the PIs, the Incumbent will be responsible for day-to-day management of one or more tobacco-related research studies including: program planning and implementation; participant recruitment, retention, and follow up; preparation of human subjects’ protocols; development and maintenance of study protocols; data collection and analysis; and preparation of reports for the funding agencies. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Represent the research unit and/or specific projects to affiliated institutions, community organizations, elected officials, and other stakeholders.

Coordinate communication among the study team(s), affiliated institutions, and funding agencies to ensure the overall integrity of the project.

Ensure compliance with SDSU IRB/HRPP and other SDSURF compliance requirements, including preparation of IRB applications.

Develop study protocols, surveys, and data collection tools and review and confirm data quality.

Oversee project budgets and resources and prepare regular progress and final reports to funding agencies.

Ensure project timelines, milestones, and, deliverables are met as described in the research proposals.

Supervise research assistants including training, work direction, coordination of schedules, and annual performance evaluations.

20%

Assist with statistical analysis, preparation of materials for dissemination of results, grant writing, manuscript writing, and presentation of findings.

10%

Other duties as assigned in support of day-to-day operations.

Qualifications
Required Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, researchers, community members, and study participants
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English orally and in writing
Required Experience/Education
  • Master’s degree in public health, psychology, or similar
  • Minimum 6 years progressive project coordination experience
  • Expertise in community-based research


Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to translate scientific findings for stakeholder groups and the general
  • Experience working with community organizations, advocacy groups, and diverse populations
  • Experience with research study protocol development and
  • Experience with conducting qualitative and quantitative community-based data collection (e.g., survey data, environmental or biological samples)
  • Experience with IRB protocols and
  • Data management
  • Online data collection experience (e.g., Qualtrics, REDCap, Google forms)
  • Data analyses experience (e.g., SPSS, Stata, or R).
  • CITI Human Subjects Research
  • Research collaboration tools experience (e.g., video conferencing)
  • Social media experience (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook).
  • Bilingual: Spanish, Somali, Tagalog, or
