Job Description
Supervises police officers on an assigned shift and enforces university regulations and city and state laws as they apply to university property.
- Performs routine to complex assignments using existing procedures
- Conducts investigations, providing input and oversight as necessary
- Performs a variety of standard assignments and responsibilities and makes recommendations for improvement/efficiency, as necessary
- Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems
- Researches and analyzes information and uses standard practices to make informed judgments and recommendations
- Has limited impact on own work team
- Works within standardized procedures and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines
- Exchanges straightforward information, asks questions, and checks for audience understanding
- Develops working relationships with internal parties and may work with external parties, as needed
- Remains objective when handling various situations and tactfully handles sensitive information
- Supervises police officers in performance of regularly assigned patrols and incident investigations; prepares shift notices and assignments; conducts performance evaluations; makes recommendations in matters concerning employee discipline and retention
- Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, and traffic laws and with university regulations
- Makes recommendations regarding improvements or changes in department operations
- Conducts accident and crime investigations and prepares detailed reports, including State Motor Vehicle Accident Reports and State Uniform Incident Reports
- Provides public assistance, including lockout services, escorts, first aid, and vehicle jump-starts
- Processes evidence, prepares court cases, and provides legal testimony
- Conducts inspections of police personnel and equipment, issues, and accounts for police equipment
- Represents the department at community and business meetings
- Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Receives instruction, guidance, and/or direction from more senior level roles
Supervision Exercised
Assigns and reviews work of other officers
May mentor (or supervise as needed) others in completing duties
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Missouri POST certification may be required prior to employment, but it is required once job is started
A valid driver’s license is required
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced levels of education and safe driving record without violations, summonses, and arrests
At least 5 years of police experience with a progressive increase in responsibilities including acting shift supervisor, field training officer, and supervisor over special events
Pass a physical and psychological exam before being hired
Knowledge, Skills, & Ability
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
Skill in completing accident and criminal investigations
Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques in area of specialty
Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony
Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus
Ability to gather and organize legal evidence
Ability to lead and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
Ability to perform inspections and/or approve installations
