Acquisitions and Cataloging Generalist

  • This is a full-time, 12-month, 35-hour week position. This position is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the library’s acquisitions, ordering, cataloging, and processing functions. The incumbent is responsible for the ordering of new materials in all formats and the cataloging of these materials, including updates to the library’s content managers for both print and electronic resources. The incumbent will work with library staff to ensure that they are trained and able to maintain all essential technical services functions. This position also works as part of our team in providing high quality, friendly, and effective library services to all library users and visitors, ranging from materials movement and performing routine library support duties including circulation desk coverage and other duties as needed.

    Reports to the Director of Library Services.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The incumbent will strive to ensure the efficient operation of the library’s acquisitions, ordering, cataloging, and processing functions.
  • Acquire materials in all formats using online vendor platforms, GCU Business Portal, and the OCLC Library Services Platform.
  • Catalog resources in all formats using OCLC WMS metadata/cataloging module, Library of Congress Classification Web, and employing professional library standards (MARC bibliographic formats, RDA cataloging rules).
  • Updates and maintains library periodical and database holdings using Serial Solutions 360 Link and OCLC Content Manager.
  • Monitors, distributes, and processes user requests for eBook and streaming video patron driven acquisitions.
  • Obtains and manages rights of library materials. Facilitates the withdrawal of library materials.
  • Works with librarians and the Library Assistant: Receiving and Invoicing to ensure the timely renewal of periodicals, serials, and databases.
  • Collects, organizes, and disseminates information about the library's collections and material funds as requested by the Director of Library Services and Librarians.
  • Responsible for the training of library staff in all essential technical services functions.
  • Works in coordination with the Director of Library Services and Librarians on specialized projects, including curation of records on ContentDM and the library’s streaming video repository hosted by Alexander Street Press.
  • Works with Access Services Generalist and Director of Library Services to coordinate staff wide projects.
  • Perform circulation desk functions (check materials in/out, collect fines, register borrowers), and rotate with team members in staffing the Circulation Desk.
  • Participate in the hiring and training of library staff assistants and student workers.
  • Integrate the core values of respect, integrity, compassion, justice and service in all aspects of interaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services and Librarians.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum two (2) years college study. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two (2) years of library experience required. Previous academic library experience preferred.
  • Experience with acquisitions, ordering, and processing of library materials in all formats required.
  • Copy cataloging experience required. Original cataloging experience preferred, including knowledge of LC Classification System, MARC bibliographic formats, and RDA cataloging rules.
  • Experience using an Integrated Library System or a Library Services Platform required. Experience with OCLC WMS preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse clientele.
  • Must have the flexibility to shift hours when needed to maintain library hours of operation (including weekends), review aspects of library operations and/or train library staff.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficient use of MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines; strong organization skills, good time management skills, attention to detail, and able to work efficiently with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work independent of direct supervision and to work well with others in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to handle high-stress and emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. and push/pull a 50 lb. cart.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality.
