Job Summary/Basic Function:

Wheaton College seeks an inaugural Professor of Practice in Design for our new interdisciplinary Design Program, starting in the Fall of 2023. We seek an innovative colleague eager to contribute to the future growth and creative evolution of the program. The full-time faculty member will be expected to teach core requirements, including Design Methodologies, and a range of courses in their own area of specialization, incorporating their practice and process into pedagogy. Professor of Practice appointments at Wheaton are renewable positions.

The Design Program at Wheaton supports students interested in creative fields with a balanced curriculum of design theory, practice, and history. Students complete a core of foundational courses; select one of two concentrations in Graphic & Visual Communication or Objects & Spaces; and complete a collaborative senior capstone in design. Students build on their liberal arts education, gaining skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and ethical problem-solving with hands-on studio experiences. More information about the program is available here .

Wheaton is committed to social justice, in ongoing efforts to create a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning community. Our DEI vision and mission statement provides a compass for this work. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to this shared goal of inclusive excellence. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated record of progressive education and practice that can situate design in the larger contexts of racial, social, and environmental justice.

Candidates are asked to submit:
1. A Letter of Application
2. A Curriculum Vitae
3. A Statement of Teaching Philosophy with a statement of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and related skills or experiences that may contribute to Wheaton’s DEI mission.
4. A Portfolio of work in Design, assembled into a multi-page PDF of less than 25MB in size, with captioned images.
5. The names and contact information for two referees. **Note that Referees will only be contacted for finalist candidates.

Minimum Qualifications:

An MFA in design, graphic design, visual communication, or closely related field, or equivalent career experience. Relevant college-level teaching experience (or a combination of applicable academic and professional experience). Ideal candidates will exhibit the capacity to advise and teach undergraduate students and will contribute to the workings of the Design Program and the College.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of college-level teaching experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have special expertise — whether in terms of particular skills, aptitudes, interests, research, or practice — that might help broaden the department’s teaching of typography, 3D modeling, UX/UI, web design, mobile design, digital fabrication, interactive design, architectural design, design for print, and/or other areas that connect to the evolving design field.
