The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a visionary and proven leader to forge a compelling future for its School of Education as the next Dean, creating change for the common good. This is a unique opportunity to join a young university on the move, with an impressive trajectory and leading academic health science center in one of the largest metropolitan cities in the Southeast. A successful Dean will inherit a school primed for innovation, following on recent successful reaccreditation and leveraging newly renovated space. The Dean will build the platform to advocate for meaningful, real-world change, not just for UAB students, but for educator preparation, educational leadership, and health-related fields at the local and state levels.
The UAB School of Education was established in 1971 as one of the first four academic schools at UAB. With its nearly 200 talented and dedicated faculty and staff across two interdisciplinary departments, the School prepares more than 2,100 dynamic and diverse students to be a force for positive change in their communities as teachers, counselors, principals, higher education administrators, and community health providers.
Reporting to the University’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean of the School of Education will provide the vision and leadership necessary to cultivate a culture of academic excellence in the context of a major public research university in a large and diverse metropolitan area. The new Dean will help transform how the School defines and delivers on its education and research missions, building on existing strengths within education and human studies and across the University. The ideal Dean candidate will have a demonstrated track record of advancing equity, diversity, and social justice; a highly collaborative and transparent style; a record of scholarship and mentorship to develop fellow faculty in research; experience developing entrepreneurial revenue streams and growing enrollment; and administrative experience to lead the School of Education to new levels of success and distinction. It is also essential that the Dean be willing and able to balance their leadership of the School with a concurrent obligation as a leader and citizen of the larger UAB and Birmingham communities, actively embracing the external aspects of the role such as student recruitment, philanthropic advancement, and external collaborations.
