Position Description
The International Studies Program invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2023. We seek an outstanding teacher / scholar with expertise in the global African Diaspora whose focus lies outside the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary studies which may include African Diaspora Studies, International / Global Studies, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies, Area Studies, or a related area, with a commitment to interdisciplinarity. The candidate should be able to teach one or more of the following courses (in rotation with other IS faculty when necessary): Introduction to International / Global Studies; Interdisciplinary Methods; and Senior Thesis. The candidate should be able to teach courses of their own design related to the African Diaspora that will contribute to both the International Studies Program (a program increasingly moving towards Global and Diaspora Studies) and the African Diaspora Studies Minor. Additionally, the candidate will teach African Diaspora and the World, a Spelman College signature course taken by all first-year students and taught by multiple instructors from various departments each semester. This position in the International Studies Program requires contributing effectively to curriculum development efforts, advising and mentoring students, providing service to the program and college, and engaging in original research and active publication. The International Studies Program is interested in candidates who will advance the curriculum geographically, theoretically, and pedagogically. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students through teaching, mentoring, and research are especially encouraged to apply.
