Position Description

The SJSU Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program (WGSS), housed in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS), is seeking a full-time, tenure-track open rank faculty position in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We seek someone for this position with an area of specialization in Chicanx/Latinx feminism and women of color feminism; candidates with secondary areas of specialization in gender and community organizing, gender and religion, gender and labor, and/or gender and migration are especially welcome to apply.

SJSU WGSS is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country. In addition to supporting the WGSS minor and a concentration within the sociology major, we are in the process of programmatic development and expansion including the creation of a WGSS major. WGSS hosts the Carol Mukhopadhyay Feminist Lecture Series, a university-wide event that draws emerging scholars in the field and is a site of feminist praxis for the campus community. We also maintain collaborations with units across campus, including various student success centers and academic departments. As part of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, which also houses the Asian American Studies program, WGSS is part of a robust network of interdisciplinary departmental colleagues. The position advertised is one of a number of hires across campus with a focus on Latinx/a/o experiences. Moreover, SJSU is in the process of launching Somos SJSU , a campus-specific Hispanic Serving Institution framework, with new opportunities for professional development around supporting Latinx student success.

The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and San José State University value diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our excellence in research, teaching, and service can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. SJSU enrolls more than 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, and around 45% are first-generation and 38% are Pell-recipients. SJSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. The university’s commitment to social justice extends from its vibrant, inclusive campus to an international network of over 275,000 alumni. As such, San José State is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so our disciplines, students, and the community can benefit from multiple racial, ethnic, and gender perspectives.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package. A guide to writing this statement can be found at SJSU Diversity Statement Guidelines , along with information about how these statements will be evaluated.
