Position Summary:

The Multiuse Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparation, set-up, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies for the science laboratory. This position supports the faculty by preparing the laboratory for use, maintaining supplies, setting-up equipment, calibrating equipment and performing preventative maintenance on equipment. Work closely with university faculty and students to ensure a positive teaching and learning experience. Ensure compliance with OSHA/EPA/California regulations and safety requirements.

Essential Functions:
  • Prepare for laboratory experiments and demonstrations for scheduled classes in close collaboration with university faculty. Maintain consumable and perishable components to OSHA/EPA standards.
  • Assist instructors and students during laboratory classes and open (weekend) laboratory hours. Train professors and students in the proper disposal of HAZMAT/BIOHAZ materials.
  • Maintain proper storage of hazardous materials and human pathogens per OSHA/EPA regulations and standards. Maintain proper documentation and permits on HAZMAT/BIOHAZ storage, disposal and training as required by the state of California. Liaison with university contracted safety, health, and environmental consultants as needed to achieve a safe working environment.
  • Maintain the laboratory and installed/portable equipment in good working order. Contract out for maintenance and repair as necessary.
  • Order, store, and maintain a current and complete inventory of laboratory supplies. Replenish stock as necessary.
  • Assist DSS in long range (six months) scheduling of laboratory classes.

Requirements:

Education & Experience
  • A bachelor’s degree in related area of study required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of working in a laboratory, experience in bio-techniques and concepts in areas of life, physical and forensics sciences, safety regulations and procedures in science laboratories, instrumentation including microscopes, spectrophotometers pH meters, autoclave, and general laboratory equipment.
Technical / Functional Skills
  • In depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, safety and chemical hygiene plans and small spill clean-up. Ability to conduct internet search and requisition for laboratory supplies, chemicals and equipment.
  • Working familiarity with Windows, spreadsheets, word processing, database, and Internet browser; basic record keeping practices and principles of staff training and supervision required.
Competencies
  • PH meters, electronic balances, autoclave, incubators, di-Water system, spectrophotometers, and computerized physiology equipment (iWorx).
Travel: none required. This is a full-time onsite role.
