The EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Instructor teaches courses covering the content and essential skills to provide emergency medical assistance in outpatient and emergency settings. Course instruction prepares students to respond in various types of emergencies that require urgent medical attention, to assess emergency situations, provide care that can save a life, and transport patients to a hospital. This role is critical in ensuring successful student outcomes.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide instruction to students in accordance with the State of California Code of Regulations Title 22 relating to EMT training, certification, and scope of practice, as well as the Local County Office of Emergency Medical Services Policies and Procedures.
  • Effective classroom instruction that covers all the techniques of emergency medical care and transportation of the sick and injured within the responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Grade student assignments and responding timely to student inquiries.
  • Evaluate students' progress in attaining program knowledge and skills.
  • Supervise and monitor student use of equipment.
  • Administer oral, written, or performance tests to measure progress and to evaluate training effectiveness.
  • Participate in curriculum and program reviews.
  • Prepare and maintain course, grades and all required documentation and administrative reports.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and security measures during periods of instruction.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry requirements, as well as University policies, procedures, and practices
  • Maintain a strong emphasis on student-centered learning.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the State of California Code of Regulations Title 22 relating to EMT training, certification and scope of practice and the Local County Office of Emergency Medical Services Policy and Procedures as related to EMT practice
  • Candidate must be currently certified Nationally and/or in the State of California as an EMT, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, Physician’s Assistant or Physician
  • Current CPR certification (AHA-Healthcare Provider)
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an EMS/healthcare clinical setting
  • Familiarity with lab instruction utilizing patient-based simulations and scenarios
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years' experience teaching in an EMS/EMT program
  • Completion of National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Level 1 Instructor Course, or State Fire Marshall Instructor 1A and 1B training
  • Current California Paramedic certification
  • Experience with teaching adult learners
  • Internet and online teaching experience

Special Conditions of Employment:

This position will teach hybrid (online and onsite) classes located in the program area. Must be able to teach onsite as required due to business necessity.
