Job Details

The Music Program at The George Washington University’s Corcoran School of the Arts and Design seeks a dynamic musician-scholar for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year in the area of African American/Afro-Diasporic Music.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

This position will be 100% teaching, with a three credit, three course load for both the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. Courses to be taught include CMUS 2123 (Music of African Americans), CMUS 2105W (Intro to Ethnomusicology), and CMUS 3175 (Jazz in American Culture), as well as a combination of studio lessons and ensembles in jazz and/or other popular music styles.  The successful candidate will be expected to be comfortable in both performance and classroom settings, and bring an innovative approach to teaching performance, culture, and history across traditional disciplinary and/or genre lines. The successful applicant will also help organize and possibly perform with students in end-of-the semester concerts and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a M.A. or Ph.D. in Music, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or related field. Applicants must have a minimum 2 years teaching experience at the collegiate level.
