Position Summary

OpenStax (part of Rice University) is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research. Our mission is to provide every student and instructor with free access to high-quality teaching and learning resources that help them succeed. We have created a library of more than 50 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served millions of students across the globe, resulting in over one billion dollars in savings. We have created additional software and course materials to help college students read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning.

The Assistant Director, Math Education inde pendently leads the development and implementation of major initiatives focused on digital learning in secondary mathematics. They collaborate with faculty and/or staff leadership to design and develop high-quality, secondary mathematics curriculum resources, establish strategy and develop long range plans. The Assistant Director develops and nurtures trust relationships with public school districts and supports the advancement of OpenStax’ learning science research agenda. Manages program administrative functions. May teach a course, seminar or workshop. May be responsible for supervising staff.

You will join a team who is driving change at a pivotal phase of our evolution, as we deliver high quality educational content, ranging from textbooks to simulations and videos to exercises to full courses, and give educators and learners the support they need in core college and high school disciplines. The Assistant Director, Institutional Relations may supervise one or more student interns or staff members.

Essential Functions
  • Leads the development and implementation of major program(s)
  • Collaborates with faculty and / or staff leadership to design programs and establish long range strategic and operational plans
  • Oversees the operations, administration and evaluation of programs
  • Identifies and implements program changes to ensure alignment with mission and program effectiveness
  • Develops and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding
  • Devises and manages financial and budgetary plans for the program(s), approves and monitors expenditures
  • For academic programs, may be responsible for graduate student recruitment and admissions, student records, curriculum support, coordinating the accreditation process, managing scholarships and fellowships, and monitoring student progress
  • May be responsible for grant preparation and submission or research administration
  • May teach a course, seminar or workshop
  • May supervise small staff (up to three full time staff)
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
  • Curriculum development and management
    • Work in collaboration with a team of subject matter experts and software developers to continuously improve upon math curriculum products
    • Manage a team of external subject matter expert in curriculum writing projects
  • District relationship management - recruit new public school district partners and nurture existing trust relationships
  • Research support - collaborate with internal academic research team to provide math guidance on research agenda and ongoing curricular research studies
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Seven (7) years of administrative experience
  • Ability to develop complex and/or multiple program partnerships and funding sources
  • Knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans
  • Ability to develop and initiate new strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage projects simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent data analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and schedules
  • Adept at problem solving, creating contingency plans and handling issues when necessary
  • Excellent client service orientation
  • Ability to lead and motivate others
  • Strategic skills to craft and implement project plans
  • Excellent attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in mathematics education
  • Experience writing secondary math curriculum
  • Teacher certification, state of Texas preferred
  • Knowledge of research methodology, measurement, and data analysis
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work across multiple projects and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team player and to treat staff and clients respectfully
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Ability to deliver instruction to teachers during professional development
