Job Description

This 12 month, full-time, non-teaching, non-tenure track on-campus position supports the Advanced Education Programs and Teacher Education Department graduate students. Collaboration with the department chairs and program coordinators is required to positively promote the AEP and TE Department and support graduate students of these departments. The successful applicant will have strong interpersonal skills, possess a desire to help students achieve personal and professional goals through accomplishment of their chosen degree or endorsement plan. A strong work ethic coupled with problem solving skills and being a self-starter are essential.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field. Work experience may not be substituted for the bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master's Degree is preferred. The successful candidate should possess advising, communication, and situation management skills, as he or she is required to interact continually with students in a professional manner. The abilities to communicate professionally, defuse student anxiety, and interact with a wide range of student personalities and needs are crucial. The advisor must be able to guide students along the pathway of the student’s major, counseling students to anticipate deadlines for enrollment, financial aid, and other critical milestones including withdrawal dates. The advisor will have a strong work ethic and will take the initiative to solve problems. The ability to organize and prioritize work is essential.

Job Duties
  • Serve as the first contact for specific AEP and TE graduate programs, which requires a full knowledge and understanding of these programs.
  • Coordinate information and answer questions regarding aspects of specific AEP and TE graduate programs such as courses to take and order in which to take them, general information regarding the comprehensive exam process, and licensure needs.
  • Advise AEP and TE graduate students on academic issues.
  • Maintain student files and records.
  • Make students aware of relevant Fort Hays State University policies and procedures.
  • Assist students as needed in the completion of enrollment such as adding or dropping courses.
  • Advise and assist with AEP and TE Department recruiting efforts.
  • Make referrals to appropriate campus and external assistance providers.

  • Develop extensive knowledge of specific AEP and TE graduate programs.
  • Collaborate with a diverse faculty and staff serving students in Kansas, nationally, and internationally.
  • Have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Have a genuine desire to help people achieve their educational goals.
  • Have a strong work ethic.
  • Be able to identify and solve problems.
  • Have advanced technology skills.

Base Salary Information:

Bachelor’s degree - $36,000 per year (12-month contract)

Master’s degree or higher - $39,000 per year (12-month contract)
