Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Belonging



Job Description:

Reporting directly to the president of Champlain College, the Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Belonging will develop and lead a comprehensive strategy to help Champlain College build a welcoming, supportive, and just community for students, faculty, and staff across our residential and online programs. The Vice President will work across academic and administrative units to advance key priorities in the Re-Evolutionary 2030 Strategic Plan, working closely with other members of the cabinet, deans, leaders across the College, the Board of Trustees, and community partners.

As a high-level individual contributor, the Vice President will set our diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice ("DEIBJ") strategy, support and coordinate units across the College, lead specific initiatives and monitor progress against key goals. The community aspires to create and sustain an inclusive learning, living, and working environment where all members of the Champlain College community feel welcomed, valued, supported, and have a strong sense of belonging. Key Responsibilities:
  • Essential functions and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Work with Champlain College stakeholders to develop an institutional strategy for DEIBJ based on the Re-Evolutionary 2030 Strategic Plan
  • Support academic and administrative units across the College to advance their key DEIBJ priorities
  • Lead specific DEIBJ initiatives that are critical for Champlain College to make progress towards its aspirational goals
  • Regularly measure progress against institutional DEIBJ goals, including workforce climate and culture
  • Implement ongoing development opportunities for a workforce focused on learning, growing, and transforming
  • Serve as the chief liaison with the Board of Trustees DEIBJ task force; collaborate with College partners and community organizations on inclusive excellence

Desired Qualifications and Characteristics:

The Vice President should be highly energetic, creative, collaborative, and possess a track record of successful DEIBJ leadership at an institution of higher learning or related organization. Interested candidates should have a passion for the mission and culture of Champlain College and a commitment to improving the overall experience of our students, faculty, and staff.

The ideal candidate possesses the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Master's Degree, Doctorate preferred
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience in organizational development, change management, and/or leadership in higher education
  • Proven track record of strategic leadership of DEIBJ in a higher education institution or related organization across multiple functional areas
  • Success engaging a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. students, faculty, colleagues, parents, community residents, alumni, etc.) with a high degree of diplomacy to create impact
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing faculty and/or staff
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, establish priorities, handle multiple tasks and projects, and lead large and complex initiatives to successful completion
  • Uses data-driven metrics and strong analytic skills to support bold innovations
  • Understands Champlain College's mission, values, and distinctive approach to higher education
  • Understands emerging and national issues in higher education, particularly best practices related to DEIBJ
