Job Summary

The Campus Controller's Office (CCO) at UC Boulder encourages applicants for the Director of Campus Accounting position! This position is responsible for campus financial reporting and analysis, planning and implementing policies, procedures and new initiatives, and providing vision and guidance to the Accounting team to ensure operational excellence for this division of CCO. Reporting directly to the Campus Controller, this vital role serves on the leadership team for the Deputy CFO/Associate Vice Chancellor for Budget and Finance, and collaborates with unit financial leadership, department chairs and university administration. The Director of Campus accounting position requires a people-focused, innovative campus leader with the vision to develop and maintain seamless fiscal processes ensuring compliance and effective reporting and analytics. It is essential that the Director develop strong partnerships with campus constituents, providing guidance and expertise of accounting practices for all levels of the organization.

The Campus Controller’s Office (CCO) provides critical support to the mission by ensuring fiscal responsibility, accurate financial reporting, and compliance with laws, regulations, policies/procedures, and contract requirements. The Accounting unit operates under the direction of the Campus Controller and is responsible for the overall management and direction of General Accounting, Fiscal Compliance, Cost Accounting, and Debt & Asset Management.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Direct General Accounting Services and Process Excellence:
  • Direct the overall operations of the Accounting unit including financial review and reporting with analytics for variances; abnormal balance analysis for campus units; cost accounting; and, debt and asset management.
  • Lead the Federal Indirect Cost Proposal for campus. Ensure the proposal complies with Federal Accounting Standards and implement strategies to ensure the highest recovery rates. Oversee the campus indirect cost distribution methodology.
  • Manage cost accounting practices for internal and external sales to ensure federal and state regulatory compliance. Manage campus debt payments and related financial reporting, including oversite of state appropriations for capital construction and deferred maintenance.
  • Direct the management of campus assets and inventory, ensuring accurate and timely reporting acquisitions and disposals, balances and depreciation.
  • Manage the partnerships between CCO and campus constituents to ensure compliance with fiscal policies and procedures. Provide oversite for fiscal compliance risk assessments and mitigation and provide recommendations for changes to existing or new policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the liaison between the system-wide University Controller’s Office and campus departments. Represent CCO while collaborating on campus-wide projects, participating in policy and process review and the implementation of new accounting practices.
  • Demonstrate a firm knowledge of higher education Fund Accounting and the overall regulatory environment
  • Enhance business systems and procedures as appropriate to ensure continued compliance with the applicable rules and requirements and to improve business processes, efficiency and service.
  • Participate in the preparation of annual audit work papers, financial statements, and various reports. Review ad hoc, monthly and annual fiscal reports to ensure accuracy. Provide financial information, reports and analysis as requested.

People Development and Organizational Leadership:
  • Collaborate with CCO leadership on the design and maintenance of the organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization’s goals and objective
  • Recruit well-qualified, enthusiastic professional staff that will actively embrace and participate in organizational changes.
  • Actively promote a culturally diverse and inclusive community within Accounting and the organization.
  • Create well-defined roadmaps of roles and responsibilities, with clear lines of accountability and ownership within the unit.
  • Direct the overall operations for units within specific areas of responsibility.
  • Lead, train supervise, and evaluate staff to drive a positive and thriving work culture.
  • Create and maintain a positive, cooperative work culture, encouraging service focused staff interaction with colleagues, sponsors, and administrators
  • Model and develop leadership and technical skills for current staff.
  • Guide the implementation and ongoing success of career paths and professional development opportunities for unit staff.
  • Work with others within CCO to develop cohesive central initiatives.
  • Assist with the development of the annual budget for the unit and perform periodic cost and productivity analysis.

University Satisfaction (engaging with and training campus staff):
  • Work with CCO staff to enhance existing and develop new training courses for presentation to the campus community. Training is to ensure personnel have the knowledge and tools necessary to appropriately follow GAAP, sponsor rules/regulations, and university policies/procedures
  • Increase engagement opportunities with university partners.
  • Initiate and maintain meaningful communication and collaboration with departmental personnel and colleagues on other CU campuses.
  • Build and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with peers across campus to ensure services to CCO’s clients are effective and provide exceptional value.
  • Lead/manage the Fiscal Year End Town Hall meetings for the Boulder campus, and other town hall-type meetings as needed to disseminate information to the campus community.
  • Assess and ensure excellent performance standards to be measured quantitatively and qualitatively. This includes defining and implementing baseline metrics.

Infrastructure Enhancement:
  • Actively manage technology for the department and campus where applicable.
  • Partner with CCO’s Associate Directors for the implementation of department, campus, or system-wide upgrades. This includes participation in design sessions, provide feedback to developers, recommend and/or deliver training to users, and provide support to the campus community in areas of need
  • Implement and manage various projects within CCO and throughout the Boulder campus. This includes, but is not limited to solution development, resource allocation and implementation.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Office of the University Controller and other campus controllers to implement new procedures or solutions that impact all CU campuses.

  • This is a hybrid position, working 2-3 days per week in the office at the CU Boulder campus.
What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this position is $135,000 - $154,500 per year.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in accounting or related field.
  • Six years of progressively responsible leadership experience with a proven track record of successfully running a sophisticated organization encompassing accounting, accounts receivable, and restricted fund requirements.
  • Successful supervisory experience of professional staff.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • A master’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible management experience within higher education accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
  • Proven proficiency with computer software, particularly PeopleSoft Financials and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with developing, managing and being responsible for diversity, equity, and inclusion planning.
  • Proven track record in managing large sophisticated projects.
  • Ability to evaluate internal controls and understand organizational risk.
  • Working knowledge of higher education policies, practices, and procedures, including accounting and reporting standard processes.
  • Experience managing differing views and the skills necessary to bring parties toward mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience with policy development, system implementation and maintenance, business process improvements, financial monitoring and compliance, and operational issues.
