Summary:

The Cabell First Novelist Award Community Liaison is a 9-month position funded by the VCU Libraries and reporting to the Humanities Research Librarian. The Liaison will:
  • Direct a community review program for the Cabell First Novelist Award:
    • Identity and recruit community-based book reviewers, using established criteria and communication channels

    • Oversee the distribution of submitted novels to reviewers;

    • Collect and tabulate reviews from reviewers;

    • Invite reviewers and community readers to the annual event

  • Write promotional articles for local media; coordinate Cabell First Novelist Award website postings with the Cabell Fellow and the Cabell Fellow Assistant

  • Strengthen publicity and awareness of the Cabell First Novelist Award annual events; increase involvement with community organizations (such as James River Writers, Richmond Public Libraries, and private and public high school teachers) in the Cabell First Novelist Award program through a spectrum of initiatives; invite community members to the annual Award event

Required Qualifications
  • MFA in Creative Writing or equivalent

  • Community organizing skills and experience

  • Experience with literary communities

  • Familiarity with literary awards programs, including both judging processes and event programming

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Confidence working independently. Occasional remote work possible.

  • Occasional travel in the Richmond metropolitan area. Must be able to adjust working hours to attend local events that may be held in the evenings and/or on weekends.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Richmond-based literary communities

  • Experience with national-level literary awards programs, including both judging processes and event programming

Salary Range: $24/hr
