Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment, the Executive Director for University Financial Aid Services will lead the Office of Financial Aid for Rice University, a highly-selective research institution located in the heart of Houston, Texas. The director will serve as a key member of the enrollment leadership team working with the vice president for enrollment and directors to develop strategies and initiatives to secure and strengthen Rice’s market position as a leading undergraduate institution to prospective students, families, and school educators. Substantial experience with contemporary financial aid enrollment management practices and deep knowledge of market trends in higher education is essential.

The executive director of university financial aid services will develop strategies, policies and procedures to administer all sources of student financial aid in a manner that is strategically driven to meet the enrollment goals of the university. The executive director will direct, supervise, and coordinate a highly skilled team of financial aid officers and ensure their development as managers of the various work functions required to run a modern financial aid office. The executive director will ensure that all university undergraduate and graduate financial aid practices are in compliance with federal and state guidelines and serve as a consultant on financial aid practices to the graduate schools and divisions at Rice. The director will engage with multiple constituents across the university, serve as a thought leader in the financial aid profession, and represent the university as a higher education enrollment leader to the public. Knowledge of Rice University and/or experience in a higher education environment is desired.

Essential Functions
  • Leads the Office of Financial Aid and oversees the administration of all sources of student financial aid in a manner strategically driven to meet the enrollment goals of the Rice University.
  • Serve as a key member of the Enrollment leadership team working with the Vice President for Enrollment to develop strategies and initiatives to secure and strengthen Rice’s market position as a leading undergraduate institution to prospective students, families, and school educators.
  • Manage and develop a team of highly skilled financial aid professionals and ensure their development as managers of the various work functions required to run a modern financial aid office, including the development of process and project management skills, strategic planning, budget management, measurement and accountability, financial aid practices and policies, and implementation of government regulation.
  • Serve as the key financial aid liaison with numerous constituents across the university to develop coordinated financial aid policies and procedures and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations on student aid programs.
  • Manage the financial aid budget and seeks to propose increased efficiencies and effectiveness in the use of staff and financial resources.
  • Keeps abreast of new financing options and aid programs for students and their families and new financing options and aid programs for students and their families and new approaches to distributing institutional funds. Follows current research on the impact of aid on students’ enrollment decisions, academic work, and life after college
  • Represents the university at professional, regional, and national meetings and conferences and through correspondence with and presentations to outside groups such as COFHE, TASFAA, SWASFA, and NASFA
Requirements

Bachelor's degree

10 years of relation experience with 5 years of managerial experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial aid to establish procedures and guidelines regarding effective and equitable distribution of financial aid among eligible applicants, placing particular emphasis upon contributing to meet the institution’s enrollment goals. Experience distributing need-based financial aid using institutional methodology and disbursing significant need-based endowed dollars, preferred.
  • Strong process and project management skills required. Proven ability to develop these skills in staff members so that they can manage work areas independently with appropriate levels of leadership input.
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative solutions and processes that respond to the ever changing field of admission and information consumption of the undergraduate prospective student market.
  • Strong staff management skills is required, including leading staff through change management is highly desired. Ability to delegate projects and processes with an appropriate level of oversight. Sense of humor and ability to rebound after inevitable set-backs, desired.
  • Experience managing a budget and identifying cost-savings opportunities.
  • High level of proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel and Access. Proficiency with ERP systems.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, communication, marketing, planning, and public speaking skills highly desired.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Process oriented; experience documenting systems and workflow processes.
  • Must possess strong time, people- and project-management skills, possess the ability to exercise independent judgment, strong data presentation skills and excellent communication skills.
