Overview

Princeton University has an opening for a Technical Support Specialist in an academic department. The successful candidate will provide support for the academic staff, faculty, and graduate students in the Department of Economics and the Bendheim Center for Finance. Candidate must have strong experience in computer administration and maintenance. The Technical Support Specialist will be responsible for administering and maintaining the department’s servers. The position requires the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot a variety of desktop computing applications, networking applications, and information access tools in a heterogeneous environment. Knowledge of specialized software (such as Gauss, Mathematica, Matlab, R, Git, Scientific Workplace, Stata, Access, SQL, or other relational databases). Essential qualities for this position include initiative, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Candidate must be able to keep abreast with new technology in regard to software and hardware. Rank and salary will be commensurate with background and experience.



Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and resolve day to day computing issues with the Economics department and the Bendheim Center for Finance, including eight other associated programs/centers. This includes Faculty, Staff, and Graduate/Masters students.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve all technology related issues
  • Support and troubleshoot AV issues in all learning spaces used by Economics Faculty/Staff/Graduate students (including five department owned spaces)
  • Support lab of twenty-five laptops for use in behavioral experiments
  • Control and monitor access to:
    - two SharePoint site collections
    - about a dozen Microsoft Teams
    - All of the departments social media accounts
    - Departmental listservs
    - Departmental file server
  • Consult with Faculty/staff regarding equipment purchases, utilize the Princeton Marketplace, OITStore, and other vendor websites to place the order for the selected equipment and then setup and deploy the new computer equipment for Economics and BCF staff and faculty
  • Consult, purchase, and request plan changes for over seventy mobile devices with cellular service
  • Serve as departments telephone coordinator, a role that manages assignment of users to phone, troubleshooting phone issues, and requesting moves of devices
  • Manage departments Web Designer who supports approximately eighteen websites in WordPress
  • Act as a backup web designer and web server administrator when needed
  • Manage and assign tasks to assistant ECO SCAD, to be hired at future date
  • Assist staff/faculty/students with web related projects in a consulting capacity or as an actual designer
  • Maintain awareness of tasks provided by two Social Media contract employees and an outside design firm
  • Serve as liaison for seminars web app developed by a third party
  • Maintain and troubleshoot software and hardware issues with department web servers, file server, shared Windows servers, and various application servers, approximately fifteen total
  • Control access to departmental servers by remote users
  • Maintain Bloomberg terminal for BCF masters students
  • Citadel administrator for Faculty projects using this system
  • Steward and facilitate use of departmental software licenses including a departmental license for Stata, various other specialized software packages, and cloud based services (Full Fabric, Sprout Social, etc.)
  • Manage graduate monitor loaner program offered by the department
  • Maintain Faculty database (Microsoft Access based) for tracking leave requests, faculty points, etc.
  • Review/monitor code42 backups
  • Provide staff training where needed
  • Give technology presentations to first year students


Qualifications

ESSENTIAL

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years experience in an IT role
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, high volume work environment.
  • Must be able to communicate and follow up on faculty requests in a timely manner
  • Experience working with servers

PREFERRED

  • Previous managerial experience
  • Familiarity with Princeton University systems
