Job Description:

Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking and many other activities.

The Career Advisor is embedded in Culpeper County Public High Schools (Culpeper County High School and Eastern View High School) as well as the Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) to assist students with post-secondary career and educational planning. The position focuses on ensuring students leave high school with an academic and career plan and have taken appropriate steps to implement their plan. The Career Advisor work with high school students, parents, staff members and community members. The Career Advisor supports a smooth transition from high school to post-secondary education by assisting students in completing college, financial aid, and scholarship applications. During the Summer, the Career Advisor will advise students enrolling at Germanna Community College.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement outreach and advising activities at both high schools and the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center.
  • Maintain strategic relationships with high schools, CTE Center, and College staff and services.
  • Maintain a case management system for recording and reporting on activities.
  • Promote Career Advising services to high school students, parents, school personnel, employers and the community.
  • Provide wrap around services in the Summer to help students transition from high school to post-secondary education.
  • Coordinate on FAFSA completion events and assist student individually with FAFSA completion.
  • Participate in professional development activities.

    Special Assignments:

    KSA's/Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, or closely related area
  • Experience working with adolescents
  • Excellent public speaking, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population Ability to travel to area high schools to perform duties
  • Knowledge of career assessment and educational pathway planning
  • Evidence of ability to understand and interpret college policies and academic placement procedures
  • Evidence of ability to appropriately handle confidential information
  • Evidence of ability to advise and assist students with career and academic decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with parents/guardians, school personnel, community representatives and employers
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and timely record-keeping and reporting

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in community college/higher education setting
  • Extensive computer experience with familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet and database
  • Extensive customer service experience with an ability to handle stressful situations
  • Experience working with adolescents and high school age students
  • Experience using a Student Information System
  • Experience in college admissions counseling, and academic advising
  • Bilingual in Spanish
