The Illustration Department of the Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for this continuing contract position beginning August 2023.
This full-time teaching/research appointment is a unique opportunity for an experienced illustration practitioner to work closely with students in MICA’s renowned Illustration Department and with the larger MICA community at a world-class art and design school.
The Illustration Department of the Maryland Institute College of Art is soliciting applications for a full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution.
The faculty member will teach three (3) credit courses at an art school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the importance of the fine arts. The candidate will be capable of teaching in all levels of the undergraduate program. Full time faculty participates in departmental and institutional responsibilities such as student advisement and faculty committee service.
On behalf of the College, the Illustration Department seeks candidates that are experienced illustrators and educators and are active in both their professional and academic careers. Candidates should have the ability to teach at multiple levels: from freshmen to seniors. Candidates will excel in mentoring students in all aspects of the art and practice of illustration. Chosen candidates will foster and guide students in discovering and developing their individual voices as artists and finding their place in current and future markets. Candidates should be able to develop syllabi for current and new courses, design diverse assignments, achieve common outcomes for each class, critique student artwork, both individually and in groups and are able to lecture knowledgeably and eloquently on illustration topics. Current areas of emphasis in the department include but are not limited to: editorial illustration, lifestyle illustration, book illustration, institutional illustration, advertising illustration, sequential art, concept art, character design and visual development.

- BFA degree
- Undergraduate art teaching experience in an accredited institution.
- Knowledge and experience in one or more of these fields: editorial illustration, reportage illustration, lifestyle illustration, book illustration, institutional illustration, advertising illustration, sequential art, concept art, visual development, character design and cartooning.
- Mastery of traditional and digital mediums and a basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and After Effects.
- Successful Candidate will be required to complete Employment and Education Verifications.
