Full-time appointment in the Graphic Design (Undergraduate) program. The Graphic Design department at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks applications for a full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution to begin teaching in Fall 2023.

Job Description: The MICA Graphic Design department seeks applications for a full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution. The successful candidate will be passionate about current and emerging possibilities for Graphic Design (GD) within networked culture, while advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in design. We seek a professional with pedagogical approaches relevant and responsive to a student body rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, class, and their intersections. The educator will teach courses across the undergraduate GD curriculum. We seek a candidate devoted to pedagogy and research within a framework of curiosity, generosity, collaboration, and critical inquiry. The successful candidate will have the expertise to teach and work across multiple Graphic Design mediums—from print to screen to object to exhibition. Our new colleague will have the ability to integrate theoretical, conceptual, and practical issues into inclusive pedagogy. The chosen candidate will foster and guide students in discovering and developing their individual voices as designers, finding their place in current and future markets. We seek a leader, passionate student mentor, and generous colleague who can further develop our design community on campus and in the Baltimore area; a citizen of the world, with a global perspective, teaching and imparting their knowledge, skills, networks, connections to our students.

Candidates’ design practice and teaching interests should intersect with our college’s Diversity Equity Inclusion Globalization (DEIG) goals and help foster creative citizenship in our students. This is a full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution. The faculty position will teach 18 credits per semester (three three credit courses per semester).

The candidate will be capable of teaching all levels of the undergraduate program. MICA is a student-centered institution, and candidates must be committed to and capable of successfully teaching, mentoring, and empowering a diverse population of talented and deeply-engaged students. The interdisciplinary nature of the Department and the College requires that faculty maintain an active professional practice and meaningfully contribute in a variety of areas that include: departmental operations and institutional governance (departmental management, advising, peer evaluation, institutional and departmental committee service), scheduled departmental and student activities, and participating in department exhibitions of student work during the academic year. all full-time faculty are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the department and college.

Requirements:

  • MFA, MA or other graduate degree.
  • 3 years teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate internships/assistantships.
  • Strong record of professional excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of work and a record of public engagement relevant to the designer’s creative practice (client work, exhibitions, online or print publishing, symposia, talks, etc).
  • Commitment or proven ability to teach to English Language Learners (ELL) and evidence of working with international students and with intercultural awareness.
  • Proven ability or commitment to integrate diversity, equity and justice within the graphic design department and the college.
  • Demonstrate fluency across multiple Graphic Design mediums—from print to screen to object to exhibition.
  • Personal commitment to teaching using pedagogical approaches relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, and class and their intersections
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of these fields: critical design, digital prototyping, graphic design history, human-centered design, interaction design, motion graphics, social design, sustainable design, or UI/UX design.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Project management skills — the ability to coordinate community-based projects, class-sized collaborative events, and/or research
  • Experience designing in multiple languages or for global audiences.
  • Display knowledge about contemporary practices, design and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contexts
  • Administrative experience
  • Interest/Willingness to chair department on rotating basis Additional Information: Candidates must successfully complete a full background check and comply with MICA’s policies.
