Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Primary Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (AVC) reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The Assistant Vice Chancellor provides visionary, thoughtful and strategic leadership for all aspects of student health and well-being including Student Health Services, Counseling Services, Student Accessibility Services, and Campus Recreation. This position also oversees the Student Health Task Team to address COVID-19 and other health-related priorities on campus. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs provides leadership and vision in administering a comprehensive range of programs and services related to planning; assists in creating campus culture that promotes the academic achievement and personal development of all undergraduate students; assists with crisis response and student issues, budget planning, new initiatives, problem solving, grant writing, goal-setting, assessment, etc; advocates on behalf of students; and fosters collaborative relationships among students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Education/Experience:
A master’s degree in higher education or student affairs administration, college student personnel, counseling, public health, health administration, or equivalent is required. A minimum of seven years of pertinent, progressive experience as a dean/director or assistant/associate dean/director or comparable position and previous supervisory responsibility of professional staff are also required. Preferred Qualifications: A doctoral degree in a relevant health discipline (e.g., counseling, clinical psychology, medicine, or public health) or a doctoral degree in higher education, student affairs administration, health science, or related field is preferred. Experience at a large public institution of higher education.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will: demonstrate the ability to lead, manage, and direct complex student affairs units with a focus on student success and programming; have a strong background of proven leadership experience in one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility; be familiar with student affairs initiatives and compliance in a higher education setting; possess a record of politically savvy leadership and decision-making; demonstrate an understanding of the diverse health and well-being issues facing college students; have knowledge of current trends in healthcare, behavioral health, health education and wellness, policy, and healthcare technology in a university setting; experience serving a highly diverse student population; a commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice; ability to contribute to, and influence, the interface between Health and Counseling Services and the campus and regulatory, licensing and accreditation requirements; knowledge of crisis intervention approaches and ability to apply skills/techniques for a broad range of presenting problems and constituencies; demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
