About the Opportunity

Position Summary:

The Academic Advisor will work in the Explore Program for undeclared students in conjunction with the Program Director, Assistant Director for Curriculum and Student Success and the Academic Assistant Director, and will provide guidance and support to first- and second-year students as they explore their academic interests and make the transition to their majors. The Academic Advisor will design and implement exploratory programs and events which provide opportunities for invaluable connections to faculty, students, and information about various majors across the University. The Academic Advisor will also serve as a point of contact for prospective students and their families, making connections and referrals to Explore Program advisors and student leaders to improve University yield efforts to recruit and retain high-talent students.


Academic Advising and Advising-Related Activities (80%)

Provide guidance to undeclared students to support their first- and second-year exploration and assist with academic and career path clarification. Through in-person, virtual and email communication, the advisor will interpret and explain academic policies and procedures and advise on curricular matters concerning major, NUpath, and other academic and personal issues as they arise. Provide course scheduling advice based on knowledge of first-year curriculum across the University to support students' timely paths to graduation. The Academic Advisor will also be expected to teach one section of the first-year seminar: FSEM1000, Connections and Decisions in the fall and spring semesters.

Academic Advising-Related Projects (20%)
Serve as point of contact for inquiries from prospective students and their families to improve the yield of high-talent student applicants to the Explore Program. Supervise student leaders in various roles, including student coordinators and NUin Mentors. Collaborate in the planning and implementation of Admissions events, including Welcome Days, NU Preview Days, prospective student and family webinars, Visitor Center and new student orientation presentations.


Master's degree required, preferably in counseling, human services or higher education. At least two years of work or educational experience, preferably in higher education. Must enjoy working with first-year students and helping them adjust to college life. The successful candidate will:
  • Be able to communicate and interact effectively with diverse populations
  • Have demonstrated counseling ability utilizing development theory to create a student-centered academic environment
  • Value and provide confidentiality around sensitive issues and have the ability to determine appropriate levels of communication around sensitive information
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong knowledge of Excel and Word
  • Be detail-oriented and have the ability to work with precision
  • Possess strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Demonstrate qualities that facilitate collaboration in a team-oriented environment
