Head of Creative and Design Services

About the Opportunity

The Northeastern University Library seeks an enthusiastic and forward-thinking individual to guide an expanding range of creative and design services that support faculty and students across Northeastern's global network. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Digital Infrastructure, the Head of Creative and Design Services ($80,315 - $124,485) is responsible for the planning and management of creative support services in alignment with the library's strategic objectives. The Head will work across Library departments and with university-wide clients to assess complex project requirements and provide quality solutions.

Specific Responsibilities:

This position will lead the units that comprise the library's creative and design service offerings, including 3D Printing, Audio Recording, and Video Recording, and will investigate emerging services and develop/propose new service models as appropriate. The Head of Creative and Design Services works in concert with library colleagues to develop a unified library-based curriculum supporting creativity and design activities broadly, and will work with faculty, students, and staff to support academic programs through workshops, tutorials, and events across the creativity and design landscape. The Head of Creative and Design services supervises and guides staff (including full-time, faculty overload, and coop) in the Library's audio, video, and 3D printing studios.

We invite people with various skills and levels of expertise to apply to this position. Candidates who meet some, but not all, of the qualifications listed below are also encouraged to apply. We also seek colleagues who are committed to building an inclusive and diverse working environment and who have been and remain underrepresented or marginalized in the field of librarianship - including but not limited to people of color, LGBTQ+ people, individuals with disabilities and applicants from lower-income and first-generation library or academic backgrounds.

Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent combination of degree/experience in a creative field and/or industry
  • Minimum of 5 years' of progressively responsible experience developing and leading creative and/or design services in an academic library or institutional setting
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective programs, projects, and services
  • Strong working knowledge of audio/video recording workflows or augmented/virtual reality desired
  • Awareness of emerging creative and design practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty on scholarly or curricular projects and to lead teams of library colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff, including setting performance objectives, and coaching/mentoring individuals to achieve maximum productivity
  • Excellent oral and written skills, ability to communicate with technical and non-technical individuals, and prepare project documentation
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and leading workshops and individual consultations
  • Commitment to building a diverse and inclusive staff and work environment

About Creative and Design Services and the Library:

Activities across the Creative and Design Services unit are designed to assist students, staff, and faculty in their interdisciplinary research and productivity, as well as personal creative endeavors, with an emphasis on arts and design, multimedia production, and 3D printing and prototyping technologies. The team manages and provides user instruction and support in the Library's audio, video, and 3D printing studios. Creative and Design Services staff partner with units across the Library to integrate these services into academic programs through a unified set of instructional and programmatic activities.

A major renovation to the Snell Library building (where the Library's audio, video, and 3D printing studios are located) is underway and will provide new spaces that will greatly expand the successful candidate's opportunities to develop innovative and impactful services across the creativity and design landscape.
