Job Summary:
Job Summary: The Advertising Program in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of San Francisco (USF) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Advertising position to begin in Fall 2023, contingent upon funding approval.

The Advertising Program is primarily seeking a digital advertising (and/or media) specialist. Candidates with other areas of specialization may also be considered. In addition, candidates should display the capacity to help develop curricula that engage diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Job Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities will include several of the following: introductory theory-based courses (such as Advertising and Persuasion, Rhetoric and Consumer Culture, Fundamentals of Creative Strategy, Fundamentals of Creative Development), skills-based courses (such as Copywriting, Art Direction, Controversial Topics in Advertising, Advertising Research Methods, Social Media, Innovation in Advertising, Media Buying and Planning), and/or a capstone course (such as Campaign Project or Internship). There may also be opportunities to develop new courses in the candidate's area of specialization.

The standard tenure-track teaching load for this position at USF is two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years). In addition to teaching courses in her or his areas of specialization, the successful candidate will serve as a faculty advisor to students in the Advertising major and minor and perform other service in support of the Advertising Program, College, and University, as well as maintain an active research program that engages students when possible.

Minimum Qualifications:

ABD candidates with substantial industry experience will be considered, but a doctorate in Advertising, Marketing, Design, Communication, Business with a focus on Advertising or Marketing or Strategic Planning, or another Advertising/Education-related field, must be earned by August 2023. Preference will be given to applicants with both industry experience and a proven record of teaching excellence. A strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of scholarship, and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. The successful candidate must be able to offer their reflections on equity, and strategies for success in engaging with BIPOC students.

Applicants should submit: a cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, a research statement or brief description of research agenda, samples of published research and/or professional work, a statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching ability (e.g., sample syllabi, teaching evaluations), a diversity statement (which may include your thoughts and/or experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation and accessibility in the field, and/or experience and success in engaging with BIPOC students), and three letters of reference, ideally two academic and one professional/industry (requested upon submission of application). Optional documents may include a creative/industry portfolio (if applicable) and industry awards (if applicable). Additional materials may be requested later in the process.
