The Assistant Director of Residence Life Education assumes the primary leadership role for community education including living learning communities; faculty in residence; and behavior concerns. The Assistant Director supervises and evaluates Complex Directors and Residence Hall directors in three of the nine residence halls within a diverse residential community housing over 4500 undergraduate students in nine residence halls and five University owned apartments and one Public Private Partnership apartment. Through the direct supervision of the complex directors and professional hall directors and in partnership with the Assistant Director of Training and Development and the Assistant Director of University Apartments, the Assistant Director of Residence Life Education and Selection ensures that a caring and welcoming living community is created consistent with the principles of a Catholic, Jesuit University and a departmental commitment is reflected to connect student’s out-of-class experiences with their academic initiatives.

The Assistant Director of Residence Life Education and Selection serves as a departmental liaison with various university offices/departments including Counseling Center, CARE Team, Medical Clinic, and Marquette University Police. The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the supervision and evaluation of various Residence Hall Staff
  • Serves as primary supervisor to a complex director, a master’s degree residence hall director
  • Through the Complex Director provides indirect supervision of bachelor’s degree residence hall directors, building managers and resident assistants
  • Conducts performance appraisals for direct reports
  • Coordinates the implementation and evaluation of residence life academic efforts
  • Promotes and develops the academic, educational, and programmatic efforts within Living Learning Communities (LLCs), to create a vibrant environment within each residence hall and University owned apartment
  • Serves as a member of each LLC advisory board
  • Works in partnership with academic colleges and campus partners, to develop new LLCs and refine existing LLCs and special living communities
  • Assists in implementing a faculty in residence program in partnership with the Executive Director
  • Serves as a liaison, where appropriate, with the Provost’s Office regarding Marquette’s student success efforts and initiatives
  • Coordinates and plans student staff selection processes including but not limited to student managers, resident assistants, desk receptionists and graduate assistants
  • Coordinates professional staff selection process in partnership with the Executive Director included but not limited to complex directors, hall directors, and assistant directors
  • Serves as liaison to Marquette University Police in matters related to safety and security including residence hall/university apartments incidents, policy violations, Safety Officers performance, fire safety drills, etc.
  • Serves as a liaison with the Counseling Center, CARE team and Marquette University Medical Clinic
  • Serves as the departmental liaison with the Dean of Students office in coordinating and overseeing residence hall conduct procedures and cases
  • Coordinates emergency response and crisis management in the residence halls
  • Serves in a backup on call rotation for live in staff consult
  • Trains all residence hall directors to respond appropriately to crises and critical incidents
  • Ensures that on-call and on-duty schedules are completed and communicated to appropriate offices and departments
  • Manages budget as it relates to living learning communities with oversight of direct and indirect reports’ residence hall and community programming councils’ budgets
  • Serves on DSA and University committees as appointed, including the CARE team and University Crisis Management Response Team
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, business or related field.
  • Requires 5 – 7 years post master’s degree experience with increasing responsibility in the area of residence life.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer competency, to include proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and web-based applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to deal with diverse constituencies.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 7 – 9 years post master’s degree experience, supervision of master’s degree full time professionals, and the other qualifications listed above.
