About the Program:

The Writing & Multiliteracy Center (WMC) is an academic program within the John Spoor Broome Library, offering classes on writing & multiliteracy center theory and practices, supporting approximately 5000 writing and multiliteracy tutoring sessions (in person, virtual, and asynchronous) per fiscal year, delivering 100 workshops covering 45 topics, conducting faculty consultations, and hosting activities and events such as Writing Boot Camps, Open Mics, and the annual Plot-a-thon Data Visualization Festival that invites students to compete using data visualizations and storytelling. WMC manages its own HyFlex teaching classroom and a Multimedia Studio with sound room, green screen, and group presentation space. WMC also coordinates a popular Embedded Multiliteracy Tutor (EMT) program supporting writing and communication intensive courses across disciplines from first-year writing to senior capstones. The EMT program involves close faculty collaboration in the design of tutor interventions, customization of virtual and in-person academic activities, and support for writing or communication-related assignments.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director and Embedded Programs Coordinator of the Writing & Multiliteracy Center is a full-time lecturer faculty position for individuals with knowledge of and ability to teach theories, principles, methods and practices associated with writing and communication, especially with faculty and students across disciplines. The Assistant Director and Embedded Programs Coordinator will join an energetic and creative WMC team consisting of a Faculty Director (associate professor), a full-time Assistant Director (lecturer), a Administrative Support Coordinator (ASC), Academic Leads for grant-funded projects, over 40 undergraduate and professional WMC tutors, and five student assistants. The Assistant Director supports the Faculty Director in providing intellectual and administrative leadership and strategic planning for WMC programs and services, particularly the growing Embedded Multiliteracy Tutor (EMT) program which serves writing-intensive and communication-intensive courses. In addition, the Assistant Director works with the Assistant Director and Faculty Director to support or lead a wide-ranging portfolio of responsibilities including operations, tutor recruitment, hiring, and education, student and faculty outreach, and program assessments. The Assistant Director will teach one course a year.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Communications, or related field; or M.S. in Science or Social Science field

Required Qualifications :
  • M.A. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Communications, or related field; or M.S. in Science or Social Science field with experience or emphasis in teaching writing-intensive classes
  • 1 or more years of teaching university-level courses that emphasize first year writing, disciplinary writing, or technical/science writing
  • Experience in writing center tutoring or writing center administration
  • Demonstrated excellence in student-centered instruction
  • Demonstrate superb writing skills and excellent oral/visual communication skills
  • Flexible and creative in solving problems and performing multiple responsibilities in a diverse community and team environment
  • Self-starter; ability to learn quickly
  • Highly detailed oriented and ability to multitask
  • Knowledge of Excel and Qualtrics surveys
  • Ability to exhibit a high-level of professionalism in self-presentation, communication, and engagement with a range of university stakeholders
  • Ability to apply effective cross-cultural interpersonal and communication skills with students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, and the public.
  • Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Preferred Qualifications :
  • Understanding of writing in the disciplines/writing across the curriculum pedagogies
  • Experience in teaching oral communication, STEM writing, and/or technical writing
  • Experience in collaborating with faculty on curricular design or assignment design
  • Ability to collect, analyze, report, and assess data relevant to the position
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets (spreadsheets, tables, automation), Qualtrics surveys and workflows
  • Ability to apply forward-thinking approach to challenges and opportunities
  • Interest in research and publishing in the field of writing and/or writing center studies
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse ages, as well as from various socioeconomic, cultural, and academic background
  • Record of research and publication is welcome
Responsibilities:

Operations, Leadership and Strategic Planning
  • Provide day to day administrative leadership in collaboration with another Assistant Director (Operations and Workshops) over a range of center activities occurring both virtually and in-person in order to achieve the Center’s mission
  • Collaborate on tutor education programming: Work with the Directors and members of the administrative team to launch orientation, training days workshops, on-going program development meetings, and tutor observations conducted every semester
  • Attend weekly WMC Administration Meetings with Directors and ASC; report on EMT activities (student EMT visits, workshops, and other related activities)
  • Assist the Faculty Director in the analysis and assessment of programs, particularly the EMT program
  • Engage in professional, university, and community service or professional development, as appropriate
  • Stay current in the writing and multiliteracy center field
Teaching and Faculty-Facing Programs
  • Teach at least one course a year or equivalent (usually UNIV 299, a 3-unit WMC tutor education seminar, but it may also include other writing/communication-related courses offered by the University)
  • Coordinate WMC Embedded Multiliteracy Tutor program, which includes promoting the program across campus, providing faculty consultations, developing and designing customized EMT Plan for courses, updating EMT modules each semester, updating and distributing EMT request forms and surveys at the end of the semester, meeting with tutors about their EMT Plan, tracking co-curricular EMT activities, and providing assessment reports at the end of each semester
  • Supporting WMC workshop program by working with the Workshop Coordinator to design and deliver WMC workshops (in person, on demand, and virtual) or workshops sponsored by the WMC
  • Design and lead WMC faculty development workshops in coordination with the Faculty Director; collaborate with the Faculty Development Director and other units on campus to promote a culture of writing and communication
  • Support tutorial observations and assessment: organize the assessment and review of in-person, virtual, and asynchronous tutorial practices of all tutors with the support of the Assistant Director and Faculty Director; provide interviews of End of Semester conferences with tutors
  • Create and support the management tutor schedules each academic session (Fall, Winter Intersession, Spring, Summer) in coordination with the Faculty Director
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Director to support the programming of Plot-a-Thon, Data Visualization Festival--a visualization “hackathon” that aims to encourage student confidence and understanding of the data visualization process
  • Provide 2 hours of tutoring on a weekly basis or as needed
Recruitment and Outreach
  • Support recruitment and hiring of tutors, working with members of the administrative team
  • Work with the Faculty Director to actively expand WMC outreach to faculty, with a special focus on California State University Graduation Initiative 2025 and the targeting of high-enrollment, high DFWI courses
Collect, monitor and assess data for WMC programs for reporting and continuous improvement of programs; work with the Faculty Director to submit WMC reports
