Schedule Information: Per course schedule; maintains a minimum of 15 contact hours of teaching and 10 office hours per week for student consultation; with consideration of release hours for clinical placement of students; evening and weekend instruction may be required.

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties: Harper College Health Careers seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty member to provide instruction in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program students and manages all aspects of the clinical placement process and ensures effective operation of clinical practicums by organizing, supervising, and evaluating clinical sites and orienting faculty & students to the site. Located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Harper’s Nursing program has excellent, long-standing partnerships with clinical agencies in the Chicagoland area, offering degree and certificate programs for students seeking immediate employment in nursing. With state-of-the-art facilities, Harper is home to a nursing laboratory and interprofessional simulation hospital, where real-world procedures and situations are simulated and practiced.

The CNA certificate program provides theory and training in the basic skills essential to the practice of health care workers who will assist the nurse in the care of patients in a variety of health care settings. Instruction includes simulated practice and opportunity for clinical application. The course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Health Regulations. As part of a stackable career path, the CNA program participates in Harper’s Dual Credit Career Partnership, in which high school juniors and seniors have an opportunity to earn college credit, and simultaneously satisfy high school graduation requirements.
  • Candidates should possess expertise in areas such as patient care, organization, communication, classroom management, curriculum development (including writing syllabi), and developing classroom teaching activities using traditional and alternative delivery methods.
  • Candidates should possess expertise in areas such as managing all aspects of the clinical placement process and ensures effective operation of clinical practicums by organizing, supervising, and evaluating clinical sites and orienting faculty & students to the site.
  • Functioning as the primary contact in communications with the Harper’s Dual Credit Career Partnership and apprenticeship programs updating with any changes in faculty, clinical sites, and absences.
  • Mentoring new clinical supervisors’ staff, working with clinical instructors to maintain IDPH standards, and monitoring staffing needs.
  • Collaborating with Harper CNA coordinator on completing, verifying, and submitting accurate documentation of Harper’s students and Harper Dual Credit Career students and monitoring compliance with IDPH requirements.
  • Liaising with testing center, dual credit administration, clinical sites.
  • Securing clinical sites and maintaining compliance with IDPH standards. Maintaining regular contact with nursing colleagues, constituents, and preceptors at different clinical sites to ensure timely placement and further relationships with partner institutions.
  • Didactic and clinical instruction of nursing students in the CNA and nursing program including course development, updating, and submitting course syllabi in required format, assessing student outcomes, research, and development of resources for instruction, and utilization and development of instructional design methods that include technology (simulation).
  • Timely evaluation of students including reporting of student grades and progress is required.
  • The successful candidate will participate in and contribute to program, divisional and institutional committees, assignments, and activities.
  • Committee work will include assignment to a faculty nursing committee.
  • Ten office hours per week for student consultation and advisement and participation in professional development, both internal and external, to remain credentialed in nursing and to advance in the instructional role are required.
Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Nursing is required. Candidates must have a current unencumbered Registered Nurse license (Illinois) or eligibility for Illinois license and current CPR or BLS certification

Experience Requirements: Minimum 3 years nursing practice in medical/surgical nursing; a current active Illinois Department of Public Health CNA Instructor certificate is required. Teaching experience preferred.
