Context of the Job:
Under the limited direction of the Associate Dean for Graduate and Post Graduate Education, the Sr Assistant Dean, Graduate Affairs provides strategic, academic, and operational direction of activities designed to support graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in the College of Engineering. The Sr Assistant Dean provides comprehensive support services to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in the College of Engineering including recruitment and admissions support; funding and financial aid issues; oversees policy and program development; and acts as the focal point for the operation of the graduate programs in the college. This incumbent must envision and predict future trends, establish goals and action plans to leverage strategic initiatives, identify, cultivate and maximize synergistic relationships within the College and University as well as outside of the University in order for the College to realize local and regional impact.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Associate Dean of Graduate and Post Graduate Education to provide strategic leadership for the graduate activities of the College of Engineering.
  • Supervise and mentor all COE Graduate Affairs staff. The Senior Assistant Dean supervises the work of senior academic advisor, a staff assistant, and associated S-contract employees, including short course instructors and consultants, as required; motivates, develops, directs and assigns work and special projects for staff; monitors workload and productivity; evaluates performance; promotes and provides staff training and development; provides assistance in analyzing and resolving complex issues.
  • Directly oversee/monitor/direct budget decisions and procedures, ensuring sound fiscal operations, with input from the COE Associate Dean. Includes detailed understanding of revenue and expenses for COE graduate programs.
  • Oversees professional and career development throughout the educational journey of graduate engineering students. Prepares a diverse community of graduate students for leadership roles in industry, government and academia.
  • Work closely with the College Marketing and Communications staff, to enhance the visibility and reputation of the College's graduate education portfolio.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor short-term and long-term goals and procedures. Direct continuous improvement and innovation for the effective and efficient delivery of programs. Advises the Associate Dean and makes recommendations on any appropriate changes in academic policy.
  • Use appropriate market studies (e.g., EAB, ASEE, etc.) and ongoing assessments to determine educational needs of engineering graduate students in order to inform college and departmental strategic planning.
  • Serve as the liaison to Graduate College, Registrar, Scholarships and Financial Aid, International Programs, Development, Alumni Relations, Career Services, etc.
  • Represent the College of Engineering at various university, community, and business meetings/events.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.



Qualifications:
  • Master's degree and six years of management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of best practices in recruitment principles, procedures, and resources, academic advisement, development, and retention issues, trends, and programs at the university level.
  • Advanced knowledge of University curriculum, academic policies and procedures, and student services resources.
  • Experience conducting empirically driven evaluation and assessment of programs
  • Experience with budget management.
  • Detail-oriented, with solid organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to manage multiple short and long-term projects, work independently, make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Proficiency with business intelligence reporting tools such as Cognos, higher education enrollment management and advising software tools and applications, statistical packages like SPSS, STATA, or SAS, and Microsoft Office Suite Applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or their equivalent and Qualtrics.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and mentor assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Higher education experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
