Context:

The Sutherland Lab (https://www.bio.udel.edu/people/msuther) in the Department of Biological Sciences (https://www.bio.udel.edu/) at the University of Delaware is seeking a Research Associate III. The Sutherland Lab studies the fundamental process of bacterial cytochrome c biogenesis using biochemical, genetic and molecular biology approaches. Under the limited supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Sutherland, the RA III will independently conduct experiments to support lab research, supervise undergraduate students, assist with training graduate students and take the lead with lab administrative duties such as training, ordering, inventory management and ensuring compliance with all university policies. This NIH funded position offers the opportunity for motivated candidates to gain technical and leadership skills in a growing lab at UD.

Major Responsibilities:

Research Responsibilities
  • Independently plan, organize and conduct research on recombinantly expressed and affinity purified integral membrane proteins.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges, sonicator, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel documentation systems).
  • Perform biochemical techniques such as protein expression, protein purification of membrane proteins, western blot, heme stain, UV-vis spectroscopy.
  • Independently work in and maintain an anaerobic chamber.
  • Analyze data, troubleshoot and propose next steps based on experimental results.
  • Prepare publishable quality figures, write results and materials/methods, actively participate in preparation of manuscripts.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and provide suggestions and technical guidance on standard lab techniques, data analysis and experimental next steps.
  • Present scientific projects at departmental meetings and national meetings.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques, take initiative and pivot when research priorities change.
  • Provide technical assistance to others in the lab as needed.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to meet performance expectations.

Administrative responsibilities
  • Order, track and maintain an inventory of lab supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain laboratory stocks, records and strains and lab member records.
  • Supervise and train undergraduate work study students and researchers.
  • Coordinate and supervise maintenance, preventative maintenance and delivery/installation of all lab equipment.
  • Maintain and update public facing laboratory website.
  • Act as lab Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) liaison by ensuring all lab members training is up to date and conduct required self-inspections.
  • Promote workplace safety by complying with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA and abiding by biohazard safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to meet performance expectations of laboratory.


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or a related field is required with at least four years of relevant professional research experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in recombinant protein expression, working with heme containing proteins and affinity purification of integral membrane proteins.
  • Experience working in and maintaining an anaerobic chamber.
  • A working knowledge of UV/vis spectroscopy.
  • Extensive experience with cloning, western blotting and molecular biology skills.
  • Knowledge of standard microbiology and biochemical principles and research methods, as well knowledge of common laboratory equipment operation.
  • Experience mentoring junior scientists ? Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated by scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and generate reports on statistical data.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches for research.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Environmental/Occupational Exposures:
  • Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods of time.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
  • The ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
  • On occasion be able to work various or long hours due to experiment timing.
