Description
Hobart and William Smith Colleges seeks a creative, innovative, and strategy-focused leader to serve as the next Library Director and Colleges Librarian of the Warren Hunting Smith Library. Reporting to the Provost and Dean of Faculty, the Colleges Librarian has primary responsibility for budget, strategic planning, personnel resources, technical innovation, facilities, and the development of the library's collections, services, and programs. The Colleges Librarian serves as an advocate and spokesperson for the library, its archives, and its special collections both on and off the campus; recognizes the challenges facing academic libraries and articulates them to the Provost and Dean of Faculty; and seeks financial support through the Colleges' allocations and external fund-raising efforts. The Colleges Librarian possesses the vision to lead the library into the future through the creative integration of information technologies, resources, and services that support of the academic mission of the library.

Warren Hunting Smith Library has a collection of more than 310,000 physical volumes, and over 798,000 digital/electronic volumes, making nearly 70% of the collection electronic. The library also has oversight of the Colleges Archives, which include photographs, documents, official records, publications, and other materials related to the history of the Colleges.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Recruits and maintains a team of seven professional librarians, nine full-time library assistants, two part-time staff, as well as student workers.
  • Provides direction, leadership development, and operational support for library faculty and staff; communicates with all library employees regarding the vision, mission, and future plans for library services.
  • Schedules and leads regular meetings for all library staff and professional librarians.
  • Formulates and administers policies and procedures governing library resources and services; develops and administers the annual budget for library operations and holdings; oversees the preparation and implementation of effective library assessment programs; coordinates, evaluates, and revises the library strategic plan.
  • Fosters a collegial work environment within the library, supports continuing professional development, and ensures evaluation of all library staff.
  • Oversees the functionality and appearance of the library facility.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with other academic and service departments.
  • Represents the library and its interests on appropriate committees.
  • Represents the Colleges library in the negotiation and implementation of operating agreements with local, state, and regional library cooperatives.
  • Articulates library challenges, changes, and developments to the administration, faculty, students, and campus community.
  • Engages in professional and scholarly activities that enhance the Colleges, the library, the community, or the library profession.
  • Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Other Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, administrative exempt position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.


Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from ALA-accredited program required.
  • Minimum of five years of distinguished and progressively responsible administrative experience in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and the ability to engage with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
  • Record of scholarly and professional accomplishments.
  • Experience using instructional technologies, digital multimedia, data reporting tools, and library management systems.
  • Broad knowledge of current issues in librarianship.
  • Experience in fiscal management, grant writing, and working with Advancement Offices.
  • Experience leading collection development and/or resource sharing efforts
  • Record of support for technological innovations and consortial activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated effectiveness in relating to and communicating with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and sound judgement.
  • Experience managing a team of professional librarians and staff with a results-oriented leadership style that promotes trust, autonomy, and accountability.
  • Evidence of engagement with undergraduate or graduate students in student organizations, library programming, reference services, teaching, research, or other experiential learning activities.
  • Commitment to the mission of a small undergraduate liberal arts colleges with a growing offering of graduate programs.
  • Familiarity with copyright law and licensing issues.
  • Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty, and students.
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
