Job Summary:

The Skills Laboratory Nurse is an hourly, non-benefited position that works out of the Samuel Merritt University (SMU) Sacramento Regional Campus (SRC). The position reports to the Operations Manager of the Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC).

The Skills Lab Nurse primary roles are to support faculty by providing skills lab practice for students after they have been instructed in class and want additional practice or need remediation; and, to serve as a resource for all nursing students; in particular, clarifying concepts and proper procedural techniques of clinical skills and health assessment.

This would be a no minimum part-time, episodic employment, not to exceed 20 hours in any one week.

Instructional & Administrative Support Assist nursing faculty in providing supervised practice time in the skills lab during scheduled open hours regularly throughout the academic year based upon student need. Hours will likely be evenings or weekends. If requested, communicates with faculty verbally and in writing to provide timely feedback regarding students' progress in the skills lab. Anticipates and meets student needs accurately, professionally, and with a commitment to customer satisfaction Teaches students nursing skills individually or in small groups. Evaluates students' progress in all aspects of their laboratory work. Designs learning activities for 1:1 interventions with students. Updates the Canvas site schedule with weekly hours and any specific skills to be addressed. Communicates regularly with the Operations Manager with any concerns with students and or faculty that need to be addressed.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, hear, stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; fine motor movements may be required when working with simulation equipment. Lifting and moving of light and/or mobile material equipment will be occasionally required. Sitting in front of computer monitors and use of keyboards is regularly required
  • The employee must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to manipulate and move equipment to demonstrate psychomotor skills.
Education and/or Experience: Registered nurse with a minimum of a Bachelor in Science and demonstrated clinical nursing experience in the field for which they would be assisting faculty.
