Position Description

The Department of Educational Leadership in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education at San José State University invites applications for an open rank assistant/associate/full professor of Educational Leadership with a specialization in higher education leadership. We seek applicants who are committed to cultivating diverse leaders who can create equity-minded change in postsecondary settings and other educational contexts through our new Higher Education Leadership MA Program and who can bring critical approaches to leadership with postsecondary students, professionals, and policy makers, among others. In addition to working with master’s candidates in the Higher Education Leadership MA Program, and undergraduates in the Department of Educational Leadership’s new Transformative Leadership Minor, applicants will also have the opportunity to teach in the College of Education’s EdD Program. Responsibilities include research and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and teaching in areas of expertise.

The Department of Educational Leadership prepares leaders to think critically and strategically about anti-racist and equity-minded approaches to leadership in education. We equip our graduates with the skills, knowledge, and experience to engage with and learn from the community cultural wealth of the diverse communities we serve. Our new Higher Education Leadership MA Program ( https://www.sjsu.edu/edleadership/academics/highered-leadership.php ) prepares higher education leaders through an equity-minded praxis approach to engage in transformative thinking and practice with the goal of disrupting how power, in the form of racism, classism, sexism, and related oppressions intersect to (re)produce and sustain disparate opportunities in accessing and succeeding in higher education.

The Department of Educational Leadership in the Lurie College of Education and San José State University values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our excellence in research, teaching, and service can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. SJSU enrolls more than 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, and around 45% are first-generation and 38% are Pell-recipients. SJSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. The university’s commitment to social justice extends from its vibrant, inclusive campus to an international network of over 275,000 alumni. As such, San José State is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so our disciplines, students, and the community can benefit from multiple ethnic and gender perspectives.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package. A guide to writing this statement can be found at SJSU Diversity Statement Guidelines , along with information about how these statements will be evaluated.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in higher education or a related discipline, such as education policy, sociology, political science, or public policy by July 20, 2023.
  • Expertise in postsecondary praxis, using experience and theory to inform practice.
  • Leadership experience working with Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Foreign-born, Disabled, and other historically minoritized groups in and out of schools, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion in higher education and in the field of Educational Leadership shape patterns of opportunity, participation, and postsecondary outcomes for BIPOC students.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • Expertise and experience that contributes to understanding higher education through a critical lens.
  • Experience as a higher education and/or as PK-20 leader, including in instructional leadership, community leadership, and/or curricular leadership in postsecondary settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide aspiring postsecondary constituents into interrogating their individual biases and larger systemic inequities in school systems.
  • Knowledge of disciplinary trends in the field of higher education leadership regarding issues that center race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, and historically underserved BIPOC communities.
  • Experience and commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
  • Experience developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate level courses online and in-person.
  • Demonstrated ability to examine and develop one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved populations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments. Must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
  • Design and teach master’s and doctoral level courses in the Higher Education Leadership MA Program and the Educational Leadership EdD Program, including special topics addressing issues of diversity, equity, and social justice in higher education.
  • Participate in curriculum development and teaching of other courses to meet the needs of the department and its diverse student population.
