Position Description

The Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at San Jose State University seeks an Assistant Professor for a full-time, tenure-track position with primary teaching and coordinating responsibilities in the Chemical Engineering program. The applicant must have demonstrated research expertise in green energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence applications in chemical engineering, bioengineering, materials processing, or nanotechnology. Particularly related to the themes identified as priority areas by the University: Sustainable Futures and Earth Systems Science or Health Equity and Health Infrastructures.

Since 1956, the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering has been committed to providing the best academic preparation for undergraduate and graduate students. The current research areas of our faculty include biochemical engineering, engineering for health and safety, sustainability, materials/semiconductors, and energy. Most of our students find gainful employment, and enjoy successful and productive careers in the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond. Required Qualifications
  • The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, or in a closely related engineering discipline
  • The applicant must have attained the Ph.D. degree by January 2022 and must have at least one year of post-doctoral work or equivalent industry/academia experience
  • The applicant must have demonstrated research expertise through high-quality peer-reviewed publications
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience
Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
  • At least one degree (B.S. or M.S.) in Chemical Engineering
  • Committed to teaching and research activities of the highest academic and professional caliber, and maintain a student-centric approach, thus contributing to the development of students as productive, responsible, and caring citizens of the world.
  • Have a strong commitment to:
  • teaching and working with a diverse population of students at the undergraduate and Masters levels
  • teaching core and elective undergraduate and Masters-level Chemical Engineering courses
  • curricular development to complement and further advance the current curriculum
  • laboratory development that will enhance the quality of education and research opportunities provided to the students
  • development of externally funded research program, and dissemination through peer-reviewed publications
    • The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter, has excellent written and oral communications skills, and be a team player
    • Aptitude for developing new or complementing existing chemical engineering undergraduate laboratory curricula
    • Aptitude for teaching core chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate courses in chemical reactor design, plant design, or thermodynamics
    Key Responsibilities
    • The Candidate will teach Masters-level and undergraduate courses in chemical engineering, conduct research in their area of expertise, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to the growth and success of the department.
    • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
    • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

    The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
