Job Description

Role Summary

MU Planning, Design & Construction (PD&C) provides services to improve the physical environment in support of MU’s Institutional mission and vision, managing all efforts in the design and construction of new structures, renovation and repair projects and infrastructure development. Planning and Design provides MU with facility designs that optimize quality, timeliness, and cost effectiveness. Project Management guides MU colleagues through the planning and design process and oversees the work of contracted architects and engineers. Construction directs the physical implementation of the facility designs. Design Services provides a cost-effective means of delivering a large number of small and medium sized projects, primarily for renovation and repair. The unit provides architectural, interior design, engineering, space planning and move management services.

Under the direction of the Director of Planning, Design and Construction, the Assistant Director of Design Services is responsible for the management of projects assigned to design services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute the strategic vision and plan for the unit’s direction and work output.
  • Collaborate with team members
  • Oversee and mentor architects, engineers, and interior designers
  • Manage internal and external design professionals and staff for planning facilities improvements, including communication with campus clients, design and planning facilities layouts, budgeting and estimating, scheduling, preparation of contract documents (drawings and specifications), bidding, and coordination with contractors and vendors.
  • Manage and direct staff to improve business performance and optimize productivity, coordinate training opportunities, performance evaluations, and maintain project and workload scheduling.
  • Provide technical design reviews, implement risk mitigating practices, ensure compliance with State and University regulations, laws, adopted codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Provide technical construction materials and methods support, provided expertise for best practices and direction during all phases of the design and construction; including ability to provide documentation as required for permitting and inspection.

Salary

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salary Range: $108,472 - $145,044

GGS Grade: 13

7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Professional License required; minimum of ten years of experience in design, construction, and management including demonstrated Architectural team management and assignments with documented budget responsibility. Extensive experience in planning and design, code analysis, project cost estimating, bidding, and coordination of architectural design documents through all phases of projects required.

Required Skills and Qualifications
• Experience with project management
• Ability to define goals, and develop and lead teams to meet them
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and all related drafting software
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Strong collaborative and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • 4+ years working as a principal architect
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Extensive knowledge of design and construction industry
  • Construction contract experience
  • Knowledge of industry standard software (AutoCAD, Revit, e-Builder, Bluebeam, Excel, Zoom, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and be self-motivated.
  • emonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals, with the ability to foresee needs, identify solutions, and be flexible with work assignments.
