Position Summary

This position is responsible for the development and implementation of the student health insurance program, inclusive of compliance and risk management needs. The position reports directly to the Director of Risk Management and Administrative Initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinates the selection and implementation of the student health insurance program and additional insurance offerings. Oversees open enrollment periods, policy renewals, service delivery, and integration with other campus departments. Ensures compliance with internal and external governing bodies and liaises with external vendors on behalf of the university.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling three (3) years (36 months), from the categories below:
  • A. experience in processing medical insurance claims
  • B. college credit for course work in insurance/benefits administration, human resource management, health information management, finance, accounting or closely related fields such as business administration and/or business management
    • 30 semester hours equals 6 months
    • 60 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months)
    • 90 semester hours equals 2 years (24 months)
    • 120 semester hours or higher equals 3 years (36 months)
2. Two (2) years (24 months) comparable to that gained at the Medical Insurance Specialist level or in other positions of comparable responsibility within the health insurance area

  1. Customer and Personal Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  2. English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  15. Judgment and Decision Making – Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  16. Law and Government – Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  17. Administration and Management – Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience within the following areas: human resources, employee benefits, insurance broker, health services, third party administrator and/or insurance company.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with group health insurance
  • Demonstrated experience working with customers through face to face, telephone, and email interactions.

Physical demands/requirements

Sedentary work. Must demonstrate high-level computer literacy and be able to work on campus, as needed. There is the possibility of working from home at least part-time.

Exam Details:
  • The Civil Service examination for this classification is a Credentials Assessment, and is based on your application materials as submitted for this posting. A Credential Assessment is a rating by the Human Resources Office of an applicant’s/employee’s education, experience and special credentials/qualifications (licenses, etc.). In order to determine an appropriate rating for each examination, a review of a résumé, cover letter, university/agency official employment application, college transcript, copies of license/certification and any other relevant material may be required.
