The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Department of Music seeks applications for a Lecturer of Musical Theatre starting in Spring 2023. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Musical Theatre including song-study classes, Music Theater Styles, and the History of Musical Theatre, as well as stage and/or music direct one production each semester. Additional responsibilities depend on the candidate’s expertise and the department’s needs. The candidate will also be expected to participate in appropriate department, university, and professional service, serve as an academic advisor, and actively recruit prospective Musical Theatre students. Thorough knowledge of musical theatre history and repertoire is required, as well as an understanding of current trends in musical theatre.
 

Minimum Requirements· A completed master’s degree in music or theatre (or evidence of a substantial professional performance career) is required.

· Successful collegiate teaching experience and departmental service

· Demonstrated professional-level artistry in the area(s) of acting, stage direction, and/or music direction.

· The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures is essential.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills are also required.
 

Preferred Qualifications

· MFA or PhD in Music Theater, Theatre or DMA in a related area.

· Prior higher education experience directing or music directing musical theatre productions.

· Industry connections and active performance credits with Broadway and Equity companies.

· Experience developing a student-centered curriculum and learning outcomes.

· Experience with student auditions, recruitment, and retention.

· Experience and interest in collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects.

· Piano skills and technical theatre expertise are an asset.

About the Department: The UNCP Department of Music, an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music, offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre, a Bachelor of Arts in Music with Music Industry Emphasis, a Bachelor of Arts in Music, an academic concentration, and minors in Jazz Studies, Media Integration, Music, Music Industry, Musical Theatre, and Sacred Music to approximately 150 music majors, minors, and concentrations. There are twelve full-time faculty, fifteen adjunct faculty, and three full-time staff members. The Department’s mission is to offer all students who have demonstrated interest and ability in music the opportunity to continue further study either for a profession or an avocation.
