Job Description

The media relations officer works in collaboration with the director of media relations to implement the university's central media relations strategy. She/he must be a versatile communicator with a proven ability to work independently but also feel comfortable collaborating on or leading a team or project that spans across work groups.

The media relations officer regularly writes tip sheets and advisories; develops targeted media lists; pitches story ideas; builds and maintains relationships with newsroom contacts. She/he works across the campus with colleges, schools and units to identify media opportunities and engage in message preparation and training serving as a liaison to college and unit communicators and facilitating the needs of visiting media on campus.

The media relations officer works with teammates to monitor, measure, and report metrics to show impact of media efforts and bring media best practices to the full Virginia Tech communications team.

He/she helps manage Virginia Tech media relations activities such as: social media accounts; livestreaming of news events; media relations team metrics; news release distribution; experts database for media relations; and training of other communicators to use media database platforms.

Responsibilities can also include media event planning, organization and management of newsmaker events and news conferences. Strong organizational skills and sound news judgment are vital in this position.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level training/experience in media relations, journalism or communications
• Experience working in media or experience managing media relations and/or media events.
• Excellent communication, writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and develop suitable solutions within established time frame; ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
• Knowledge of media and media trends.

Preferred Qualifications

• Understanding of web development tools and best practices.
• Knowledge of best practices in social media and experience using and managing content on social media outlets.
• Knowledge of multimedia principles, concepts, and techniques and experience shooting and producing video.
• Experience in higher education, public relations, advertising, and/or marketing.
• Experience live-streaming events.
• Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud software (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
• Experience using web content management systems
