Description
The assistant professor in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) will pursue a research agenda in the rhetoric of health and medicine and will exhibit a commitment to innovative teaching. Instructional duties will be in first-year writing primarily and upper-division and graduate writing courses in area of specialization. 2/2 teaching load; tenure track. Other duties include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, actively contributing to program initiatives, and serving the university community.

The assistant professor will support a new major in Writing and Rhetorical Studies that is currently under development and will be a leader for the PWR's two popular writing minors. They will also contribute to the development of a newly approved MA track in Writing and Rhetoric, in partnership with the university's separate Department of English. Furthermore, this individual will focus on institutional efforts to grow research grants in relevant areas, and will seek to collaborate with the university's medical, health, social work, and/or nursing faculty for research and curricular innovation.


Qualifications
Required qualifications: a PhD in rhetoric, composition, or writing studies with a focus on health and/or medical rhetoric and communication in hand at the time of appointment, evidence of the ability to conduct and publish scholarly research in relevant areas, and three or more years of experience teaching first-year writing. Preferred qualifications: demonstrated interest in securing external research funding in relevant areas, experience with curriculum development, knowledge of research methods in writing studies, record of working collaboratively and/or across the disciplines, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
