The Department of Urology is seeking a Clinical Nurse to work collaboratively as a member of the care team for patients with urologic conditions. The Clinical Nurse will coordinate a variety of clinical activities and provide nursing case management services to patients. The position will also work collaboratively with resident physicians, pulmonary fellows, advanced practice care practitioners, administrative coordinators, and others within the Department of Urology.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Counsels, supports, educates, and coordinates resources needed by patients with urologic conditions and disease.
  • Independently assesses laboratory reports for abnormalities, communicates abnormalities to medical provider; implements intervention plans when clinically warranted in collaboration with provider.
  • Schedules nursing appointments for education on disease process, self-care/self-management, and self-injection/catheterization, if necessary.
  • Monitors and collaborates with organizations and payers to maintain continuity of care. This may include letters of medical necessity for accommodations, appeals for access to treatment, Family Medical Leave Act form completions, Social Security Disability forms and short/Long term disability forms.
  • Meets with other staff (administrative coordinators, advanced practice practitioners, residents) as needed to keep clinical workflows optimized.
  • Successfully manages fast-paced clinical environment with ability to negotiate frequent interruptions in planned work.
  • Regularly interfaces with patients and a multidisciplinary care team of providers and with clinic and research staff.
  • Provides phone triage during clinic hours and help physicians with between-visit management of symptoms and medications. Prioritize and route messages as appropriate to the physicians.
  • Oversees personal and provider Epic in-baskets triaging appropriately.
  • Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature.
  • Follows up on lab and study results, notifying the physician and patient as appropriate.
  • Returns patient phone calls.
  • Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic.
  • Populates patient history in Epic. Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians.
  • Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates.
  • Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland.
  • Provides nursing care to clinic patients to begin with the first encounter with the patient by phone or in clinical setting and continues throughout the course of care. This constitutes independent collection of medical information, physical exam, and assessment of patient to discuss with supervisor, then completion of medical documentation and implementation of treatment plan.
  • Perform case management services to patients from initial intake visit through termination of services.
  • Monitors and collaborates with organizations and payers to maintain continuity of care (e.g. letters of medical necessity, appeals for access to treatment, disability forms).
  • Serves as a clinical resource on the nursing assessment of the complex patient.
  • Regularly interfaces with multidisciplinary care team of providers and with clinic and research provider.

  • Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard to input and obtain data.
  • Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice.
  • Knowledge of current health care environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required to service a diverse customer base.
  • Ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy and with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to use initiative and judgment and to identify, analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-direction and initiation. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to reach for push pull and/or lift patients and equipment with little likelihood of injury.
  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm for example using a keyboard.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters to hear within normal ranges and ability to move about.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse within the State of Maryland.
  • Current CPR certification. If not certified currently, will need to complete certification within sixty (60) days of hire.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related discipline.
  • At least one year in Urology or Surgical Oncology environment.

Starting Salary Range: $62,780 - $86,390 (Commensurate with experience)
