The lab support functions are essential and will involve ordering lab supplies, maintaining inventory, assisting sample and instrument preparations for experiments, managing database, and maintaining animal colonies. We are seeking a Laboratory Technician who is highly motivated, energetic, independent individual, with an interest in neurobiology to work in a fast-paced and dynamic basic science lab. A willingness to work with mice and careful recordkeeping regarding experiments are both required. Strong computer skills are required to maintain electronic databases. Exceptional organizational ability, attention to details and strong communication skills will be required to carry out the tasks. The candidate must be willing to learn and master new and complex technologies.

Depending on successful performance of essential lab management functions, a lab technician may be assigned to an independent project and may contribute as co-author to manuscripts. The research requires an understanding of the theory behind molecular and cell biology experiments and applying analytical skills to identify and trouble-shoot complex experiments, but no prior experience in research is necessary.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ordering.
  • Managing shipping/receiving.
  • Stocking supplies (generate a list of supplies w/locations, quantities left). Check once a week.
  • Animal colonies maintenance (genotyping).
  • Database management (printing out lab freezing record every two months, making sure the database is up-to-date).
  • Plasmids (central stocks maintenance, dna and glycerol stocks).
  • Generate lentivirus for lab use and maintain database..
  • Making LB medium and LB agar plates.
  • Assisting sample preparations.
  • Organize glassware and plasticware for experiments.
  • Autoclaving waters for culture lab and molecular biology work.
  • Assuming successful, independent operation of molecular biology and the lab administration, it is expected that the successful applicant will participate in ongoing research projects. This will include planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Research will involve utilizing basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, spectrophotometer, PCR machine, electrophoresis units, light microscopes, and laminar flow hoods.
  • The successful applicant will likely also conduct experiments utilizing more sophisticated instrumentation, such as super-resolution fluorescence microscopes and electron microscopes.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework.
  • Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Experience in basic laboratory procedures required.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred


Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic computer skills are essential.
