Job Summary

The sample processing and testing technician is responsible for receiving laboratory specimens (blood and other body fluids), insuring specimen identity and acceptability, and entering orders for laboratory testing into the Lab Information System. Biomedical technologists also prepares specimens for analysis. They respond to telephone inquiries and provide information related to specimen requirements, test availability, specimen testing status, and laboratory results. In addition, the biomedical technologists prepare specimens for referral to outside reference laboratories and insure that all storage requirements are met.

Essential Functions
  • Provide technical knowledge and expertise in clinical laboratory analysis.
  • Provide technical knowledge and expertise in clinical laboratory analysis with expert-guided recommendations for required tasks, length of tasks, responsible treaters, essential characteristics and material assignments.
  • Adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), International Air Transportation Association (IATA) Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and infection control procedures.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing basic study related procedures as required.
  • Execution and maintenance of research studies.
  • Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting and maintenance of all clean rooms and equipment.
  • Assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, lab ordering and stocking, as requested.
  • Process and ship samples according to all regulations and protocol requirements.
  • Document all correspondence and communication pertinent to the research.
  • Comply with all the rules and regulations as applicable to duties.
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of laboratory studies, as requested.
  • Maintain and update files of all applicable regulatory documentation for IACUC or IRB (including protocols, approvals, amendments, modifications, etc.) as well as any communications with the sponsor or any other Federal or regulatory office (including prior approvals, change in scope, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Exposure Control Plan which includes the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen standard and applies standard precautions to work practices and knows how to appropriately deal with chemical or biological spills.
  • Demonstrates safe practices in the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Reports any unsafe practices or conditions to appropriate responsible parties.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS degree with MLS or MT preferred. Certifications, education, and/or experience must meet CLIA requirements for moderate and high complexity testing.
  • Instrumentation experience preferred (QuantStudio 6 Pro Real-Time PCR System, SmartStart Orientation (94 and 384 plate capabilities) along with a Kingfisher robotic extraction apparatus and QiaAgility liquid handling system; and Roche Cobas 6800).
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
  • Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical
  • Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC)
  • Medical Tech credentialed from the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Tech credentialed from the American Board of Bioanalysis (AAB)
