Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is the chief data strategist at the institution and is responsible for leading data governance and fostering a data-driven decision-making culture to enable effective student success strategies at Weber State University. The individual will report to the Provost and lead the Student Success Data and Strategic Analytics unit in the Office of Academic Affairs.

The CDO will provide strategic leadership for and overall management of data processes and systems including the utilization of data to support student success. This includes the effective use of data for reporting, analysis, and actionable insight; the management and coordination of institutional data for a wide range of uses including accreditation; external reporting; student enrollment; course offering optimization; student engagement; retention and success; and student support services.

The CDO will lead WSU's data governance efforts by developing, maintaining, and enforcing data governance standards. The individual will collaborate with all internal and external reporting stakeholders including the core data analyst team, the information technology team, and data stewards in the organization to ensure university data have integrity and are accessible, trustworthy, secure and compliant with data privacy regulations.

The CDO will also monitor trends in analytics and develop the use of innovative approaches and advanced technologies to maximize return on investment for university student success initiatives. The CDO is also responsible for providing training and key insights to assist stakeholders in making data-informed decisions. The individual will develop strategic relationships with academic and administrative areas including associate provosts, deans, and vice presidents. An important function will be to demonstrate and articulate the value of data governance and student success data initiatives to the campus community.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree
  • 8 years of related work experience


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Earned doctorate
  • Significant experience with analytics tools and platforms.
  • Demonstrated management and supervisory abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with other university offices including academic colleges and units
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple, simultaneous projects with attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and procedures governing data confidentiality and security.
  • Advanced knowledge of analytics methods in higher education, including both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
