Position Summary

Governors State University (University Park, IL), a minority-serving institution, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History beginning in the Fall 2023 semester. This position is a 10-month contract with a teaching load of 21 credit hours (7 courses) in the fall and spring semesters; summer teaching is available but not required.

We seek a History teacher-scholar specializing in African or Asian history (time period and focus region are open) who is committed to enhancing our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusivity and who can complement existing faculty strengths. The successful candidate will contribute to our program by teaching courses in world history, transnational history, upper-level major courses (methods, public history, thesis), courses in area(s) of specialization, and interdisciplinary first-year seminars. Candidates should provide evidence of robust teaching skills, a commitment to incorporating scholarship on and by underrepresented and/or marginalized groups into course content, and the potential for a strong record of scholarship. A Ph.D. in a relevant field of study is required at time of appointment. Women, people of color, people with disabilities, and first-generation college graduates are especially encouraged to apply.

Governors State University is the only regional public comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving approximately 5500 students annually. Minimum Qualifications

· Ph.D. in History or closely related field with specialization in African or Asian history (time period and regional concentration are open) by August 16, 2023.
· Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
· Demonstrated scholarly expertise on underrepresented and/or marginalized groups.
· Evidence of active research agenda and potential for strong scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience with first-generation, culturally diverse, and/or non-traditional students.
· Minor field or teaching experience in Asian, Middle Eastern, African, World, and/or transnational history.
· Demonstrated ability to infuse course content with scholarship related to underrepresented and/or marginalized groups.
· Experience or interest in designing and teaching online courses.
· Evidence of teaching excellence.
· The ability to contribute to minors in Black Studies; Global Studies; Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o Studies; and/or Gender and Sexuality Studies.
· Bilingual language proficiency (Spanish or Arabic preferred).
