Scope of Job:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applicants for one or more faculty positions as part of a college wide cluster hire in the broad area of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and intelligent engineering systems with applications in healthcare, material science, intelligent transportation systems, or control systems and robotics. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following centers or upcoming doctoral programs in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: the Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems (MECIS), the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS), the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems (CAMICS), the Center for Nanotechnology, the proposed high performance computing cluster, an interdisciplinary PhD program in materials science and engineering, or a PhD program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications.

The positions are for tenure track assistant professors; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for credit toward time on tenure track or for appointment as associate professor.

The ECE department at UTRGV has an enrollment of over 750 undergraduate students and 40 master's degree students. The programs (BSEE & BSCE) have ABET accreditation, and a new PhD Program in Material Science & Engineering will start in Fall 2023. For further information, please visit our website at

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a related field from an accredited university (at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2023). Prospective candidates in all computer engineering areas are strongly encouraged to apply.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate/graduate core courses, develop laboratories, initiate externally funded research, have publications of research results in archival journals and/or conference proceedings and are expected to support the newly approved master’s program in computer engineering. We seek scholars whose research agenda aims to develop new methods, laboratory and understanding in machine learning and deep learning algorithms, optimization, data science, computer vision, image processing, and high performance and cloud computing by considering AI in healthcare, material science, intelligent transportation systems, or control systems and robotics, and where the research simultaneously informs progress in AI and advances department, institution, and societal goals. Candidates must be willing to offer or teach courses in algorithms and data structures, embedded systems, systems programming, software engineering, and operating systems, and are expected to have the potential for collaboration with faculty in the department. Candidates are also expected to lead and propose new research projects and proposals to attract external federal, state, or industrial funding, such as NSF, DoD, NIH, USDOT, NASA, TxDOT, or others.

The highest consideration will be given to applicants who have expertise in the Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning areas.

Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
