Scope of Job:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECE) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applicants for one or more faculty positions as part of a college wide cluster hire in the broad area of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and intelligent engineering systems with applications in transportation, autonomous unmanned vehicles, control systems, systems engineering design, smart sensor technologies, and condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of mechanical systems and cyber-physical infrastructure. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following centers or upcoming doctoral programs in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: the Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems (MECIS), the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS), the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems (CAMICS), the Center for Nanotechnology, the proposed high performance computing cluster, an interdisciplinary PhD program in materials science and engineering, or a PhD program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications.

The positions are for tenure track assistant professors; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for credit toward time on tenure track or for appointment as associate professor.

The MECE department at UTRGV has an enrollment of over 1000 undergraduate students and 75 master's degree students. Minimum Qualifications:
(1) Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field of study from an accredited institution (at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2023).(2) Evidence of high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems with applications in Mechanical Engineering.(3) Evidence of a strong potential for obtaining funding and supporting graduate students.(4) Excellent communication skills and teamwork ability.(5) Have experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering.(6) A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:


Preferred Qualification:
(1) Experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching courses in dynamic systems, modeling of physical systems, and control systems.(2) Experience and/or demonstrated ability working with undergraduate and graduate engineering students.(3) Experience and/or demonstrated ability developing and teaching courses integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems content within the context of mechanical engineering applications.(4) Experience and/or demonstrated ability to lead and propose new research projects and proposals to attract external federal, state, or private funding, such as NSF, DoD, DOE, NIH, USDOT, NASA, TxDOT, or others.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement system of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
