Concordia University Chicago (CUC) seeks nominations and applications for an experienced, innovative and collaborative academic leader for the position of Assistant Dean, College of Education & Director for the Center of Christian Education. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Education and is located in River Forest, IL.

The College of Education (COE) prepares students for careers in education, and the Center for Christian Education focuses on preparing educators who are informed by teachings of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. COE accounts for more credit hours than any other college at CUC and carries on the founding legacy of Concordia as a Teacher's College. The Assistant Dean will work with the Dean of the College to support growth in the following areas:

  1. Developing educators informed by the CUC mission for public K-12 schools;
  2. Developing educators for Lutheran Church Missouri Synod K-12 schools; and
  3. Developing capacity in the areas of classical education, Christian education, urban education, vocational education, as well as offering support for families that homeschool.

The Assistant Dean of the College of Education is expected to support and uphold the vision and mission of Concordia University Chicago.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Serves on the leadership team of the College of Education (COE)
  • Promotes student success
  • Develops opportunities for innovation, collaboration, fundraising, and growth in the college's fields and disciplines, nationally and internationally
  • Serves as tenure-track faculty in the Division of Teaching & Learning
  • Increases COE's visibility nationally as a leader in Lutheran urban education
  • Establishes and directs the Center for Christian Education, which will serve as a hub for co-curricular programming, academic partnerships, and scholarship in the field and community
  • Completes other responsibilities as recommended or assigned
  • Candidates must support and be committed to the mission and identity of Concordia University Chicago, a university of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS).

Skill Sets:

  • A record of successful organization and execution of administrative work at the program or university level
  • The ability to challenge, motivate and manage faculty and professional staff to high levels of performance and collaboration in the delivery of complex projects over a period of up to a year
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with students, faculty, staff and senior leaders
  • Demonstrated analysis, problem-solving, and project management skills, including implementation and roll out of steps needed to support new partnerships and co-curricular programming
  • Experience with creating and managing an institutional budget
  • Capable and prepared to address internal and external challenges
  • Working familiarity with the structure of private, faith-based higher education in general and the educational institutions of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) in particular
  • Familiarity with and support of LCMS doctrinal positions; a current/active listing on one of the ministry rosters of the LCMS is a preferred qualification as well as an active membership in an LCMS congregation

Minimum Experience Required:

  • 5+ years in higher education administration and/or leadership
  • Experience with K-12 teaching and administration is expected
  • Faculty rank at Associate Professor or above is required; tenured status preferred
  • A successful and innovative record of teaching and scholarship that meets the qualification for a tenure-track/tenured faculty appointment commensurate with present rank and experience

Education Requirements:

  • An earned doctorate in an academic discipline or higher education leadership from a regionally accredited institution
  • Undergraduate certification or colloquy completion as a professional church worker in one of the education-related ministries of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and eligibility for a Divine Call as a Commissioned Minister is preferred (Post hire colloquy completion is a possibility)
