Position Responsibilities:

Responsible for writing and developing concise content for the SOE website and other communications channels, that supports and promotes the VCU School of Education programs to the VCU community and beyond:

• Develop a set of questions, schedule and conduct professional interviews with SOE students, alumni, faculty and staff members • Write clear and concise feature stories or articles that will be featured on the SOE website and other communications channels

• Attend School of Education events to cover the event and write feature stories as needed

• Create, schedule and post content on the SOE social media channels

• Work with Communications Team on campaigns, boosts and ads

• Review social media metrics and recommend changes based on them

• Maintain regular work hours based on schedule outlined with Communications Team

• Participate in weekly meetings with the Communications Team to provide a report on the status of current and future assignments

• Work in conjunction with other student and professional staff

• Assist Communications Team with other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications

• Verifiable experience with and thorough working knowledge of English grammar and the Associated Press Style Guide

• Knowledge of basic photographic principles and ability to properly compose and shoot photos

• Working knowledge of social media including Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Youtube and Facebook

• Attention to detail, proofreading, and critical thinking skills

• Ability to convey complex ideas through written communication and written and visual storytelling; ability to convey complex and specialized academic concepts to a lay audience

• Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direction

• Ability to effectively manage time and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in a variety of writing styles/modes, such as feature or long form writing, standard news/press release format writing, perhaps an interview-based article, and specific online writing (where the emphasis is on being especially clear and concise).
